Solidarte: Today We are all French

It's been noted that the chances of an ISIS attack in the US is not so high. This may be the case-it's always good to have a proper context in terms of terrible threats.

However, that may be, however, it's clear that the chances are much greater in Europe and this is the second such attack in Paris this year.

The first one was the attack on the cartoonists in January that left 11 dead. This one has left far greater carnage-the French have emphasized that this is the first suicide attack  on French soil.

A further disquieting aspect of this is that French Prime Minister Hollande now says that this is the work of ISIS. This means that despite our work against the terror organization, it's still growing.

"President François Hollande called the terrorist attacks that killed 127 people in Paris on Friday night an “act of war,” and blamed the slaughter on the Islamic State."

“It is an act of war that was committed by a terrorist army, a jihadist army, Daesh, against France,” Mr. Hollande said from the Élysée Palace, using an Arabic acronym for the Islamic State. “It is an act of war that was prepared, organized and planned from abroad, with complicity from the inside, which the investigation will help establish.”

Mr. Hollande did not specify what intelligence the authorities had gathered to established the Islamic State’s involvement."

For it's part, ISIS is taking responsibility for the attack.

"The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the catastrophic attacks in the French capital, referring to them as “miracles” in a written statement released by one of its official publication arms and distributed on Twitter via the accounts of known militant propagandists."

"Just like a similar claim of responsibility after the crash of a Russian airliner over the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt two weeks ago, the statement from the Islamic State provided few details, making it difficult to ascertain its veracity."

ISIS wants to be seen as responsible in its macabre desire to show it's on the level of al Qaeda or better.

Yet another disquieting aspect is that often these attacks like the January Charles Hebdo attacks is the work of a small group of lone wolfs who ISIS or al Qaeda wins over online or on social media.

Here is President Obama's reaction to this sad day for France and for humanity:

President Barack Obama late Friday called a string of attacks in Paris "an outrageous attempt to terrorize innocent civilians."

"Once again we've seen an outrageous attempt to terrorize innocent civilians," he said in a statement from the press briefing room of the White House. "This is an attack not just on Paris. It's an attack not just on the people of France. But this is a a attack on all of humanity and the universal values that we share.""

"We are reminded in this time of tragedy that the bonds of liberté, égalité and fraternité are not only values that the French people care so deeply about, but they are values that we share," he said. "Those values are going to endure far beyond any act of terrorism or the hateful vision of those who perpetrated the crimes this evening."

At the time he said this, it wasn't yet known who was behind the attacks-that is is apparently ISIS has been established since.

Here is Hillary Clinton on the attacks:

“All our prayers are with the people of France tonight. We must stand side-by-side every step of the way with France and our allies around the world to wage and win the struggle against terrorism and violent extremism. Even in this darkest night, Paris remains the City of Light. No terrorist attack will ever dim the spirit of the French people or our common commitment to the democratic values we share.

  1. To your list of recent ISIS attacks you can add the suicide bombings in Lebanon that happened between the bombing of the Russian airliner and this latest attack in Paris.

  2. To enhance your "We are all French" theme, here's a thought: find a tri-color background and put it up for a day or two.

  3. A collection of tweets... some good, some bad, some atrocious (Coulter):

Here's another article along those lines:

I'm no fan of Islam (especially fundamentalist), but I am a fan of lots of Muslims... ex coworkers and college friends among them. It's a shame that Muslim condemnations of terror don't get more press. I feel bad for my friends every time something like this happens.

  4. There are many fine Muslim organizations that are totally anti terror
