For the 2015 NY Giants, it's Time to Look at the Glass as Half Full

Yes, like most of Big Blue Nation, I was very disappointed  and frustrated by yesterday's nail-biting loss to the unbeaten Patriots.

Yet, I've heard some very negative commentary about the G-Men today from the pundits. Michael Kay on his show this afternoon said that great teams win close games and bad teams lose them.

But I thought his co-host Don La Greca got this one right. The Giants may not be a great team but they aren't terrible either. Kay last Friday said that they were.

So while you can criticize the G-Men for not being able to close the deal-this is their 4th game this year that they had late 4th quarter leads and every opportunity to win and failed to do so-you can't say they're terrible.

Kay and others who said they are should at least admit they're wrong. The Giants are at least an ok team as compared with a bad team the last couple of years. Ok, obviously we want a great Giants team but Rome isn't built in a day.

And I actually think there is a lot of positives the team can take from this loss. They showed that they belong on the same field as the reigning Super Bowl Patriots. Skip Bayless-who is always very biased when he talks about the Giants-claims the Pats have gotten past the Eli Jinx.

But this game is similar to the other Eli-Brady matchups in 2007 and 2011 in that the Pats failed to blow the Giants out.

Indeed,, I haven't wanted to go totally Pollyanna-though I tend to be by nature optimistic-but from the start of the year I've sort of wondered if it's possible that lightning could strike a third time-the pattern seems to be that the years that the Giants play New England, they win the Super Bowl-2007, and 2011.

And this game, was very similar to the first Giants-Patriots game of 2007, where the Jints had an 11 point second half lead and the Pats just squeaked by at 38-35.

Sure the Giants make too many mistakes-the one I really want back is Landon Collins failure to hold on to that should be interception from Brady on his first throw of the final drive. That should have been it. But Collins failed to hold on with two hands-using one to brace his fall. Ideally, you wish he hadn't jumped in front of Rogers-Cromartie who has been a interception and fumble recover machine this year.

This Giants team is obviously very formidable offensively with Eli, Beckam, and some other great supporting actors. like Shane, Vereeon, Reuben Randle, and Larry O'Donnell-and Dwayne Harris has been a great pickup on special teams with that big kickoff return for a TD against his old team, the Cowboys-who better to do that against?

Their defense for most of the year has been weak. But the last two weeks with JPP returning-even missing a finger and a half-they are finally beginning to show a pass rush-they gave Brady a hard time yesterday.

However, the one positive has been the defense's ability to force turnovers which was on display again-though Collins' near miss int is the one you really want back.

So to me, the glass is half full overall and the pundits have been too negative. At the least the 2015 team isn't terrible and with Eli, Beckahm, and company very entertaining. They are better than most pundits expected-which was also true of the 2007 and 2011 teams.

And what they can take away from the game is they can compete with the best. As La Greca said, if they play how they did on Sunday against their next three opponents-the Redskins, the Jets, and Miami, they will win those games. If so at 8-5 they will be in  a very strong position in a weak division.
