In Latest Poll, Trump, Carson, and Cruz Take 66% of the GOP Vote

Think about that. This is two thirds of the primary vote. Let me guess-it's still early, right? No one is paying attention yet-despite the huge ratings the GOP debates have garnered.

"For months, many political observers — your humble blogger included — have assumed that Donald Trump would simply have to fall to Earth at some point. The rules of political gravity dictate as much. When Ben Carson rocketed to the top of polls, many similarly expected those rules to eventually apply to Carson, too."

"But the political classes are now taking seriously the possibility that either Trump or Carson could win in Iowa or New Hampshire, after which all bets truly are off."

"Republicans are now seizing on the terrorist attacks in France to argue that this time, GOP voters will simply have to turn away from Trump and Carson and instead give renewed attention to the GOP candidates with governing experience. But how many times have we been told that this or that event or factor is finally what will deflate Trump’s (and, now, Carson’s) chances? Also, doesn’t it seem possible that the attacks might give Trump’s immigration rhetoric a boost among GOP voters?"

Sargent wrote that yesterday, In the 24 hours since, it's clear that Paris won't harm Trumpism but make it even more formiddable than ever. Now you have Chris Christie reversing himself totally on Syrian refugees.

"New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Monday joined the chorus of Republican governors and Republican presidential candidates pushing for restrictions on U.S. admission of Syrian refugees, but he said he would even oppose allowing 5-year-old Syrian orphans into the country."

"I don’t trust this administration to effectively vet the people who are proposed to be coming in, in order to protect the safety and security of the American people, so I would not permit them in," Christie told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt."

"Hewitt then asked Christie if he would let in orphaned 5-year-olds from Syria."

"We could come up with 18 different scenarios. The fact is, that we need for appropriate vetting and I don’t think orphans under five should be admitted into the United States at this point. They have no family here. How are we going to care for these folks?" Christie replied. "We need to put the safety and security of the American people first."

Just a few months ago he said the US has an obligation to help the refugees. Trumpism is on the march and in a big way. As is Ben Carson's Islamophobia.
"Donald Trump and Ben Carsoncontinue to dominate the field of candidates seeking the Republican presidential nomination, according to a survey released Monday by the University of Massachusetts Amherst."

"Trump, the reality TV star and billionaire real estate tycoon, leads the Republican field with 31 percent of likely GOP voters listing him as their first choice. Carson, a retired neurosurgeon, comes in second at 22 percent."

"The next closest threats are U.S. senators Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, with support rates of 13 percent and 9 percent, respectively."

"Support for the remaining Republican presidential candidates did not even reach 5 percent, according to the poll, a national online survey of 318 likely Republican primary voters by YouGov America under the direction of the UMass Poll."

Ouch. Rubio is just at 9%. The attacks on his love of 'amnesty' may be having an effect as he's also losing to Cruz. I guess Jeb is under 5%.

And guess who stands to gain the most if Carson drops out? Trump-and vice versa for Carson if Trump drops out. The candidates who the voters like the least? Jeb Bush-Christie, and Lindsay Graham are also way down there.

Meanwhile the poll also shows Hillary running away with things. Not so many Love the Bern.

"The poll also surveyed 381 likely Democratic primary voters, determining that U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont continues to struggle to gain traction against Hillary Clinton, the former secretary of state and U.S. senator from New York. Clinton was the top choice for 63 percent of likely Democratic voters, compared to just 29 percent for Sanders."

"The poll found that Democrats view Clinton as having the best chance of winning the general election. Seventy-eight percent see her as the most competitive candidate to take on the Republican nominee, compared to just 19 percent for Sanders. "Even many of Sanders' supporters recognize that Clinton has the best chance of winning in November, and that is obviously a key part of her campaign juggernaut," Schaffner said.
