It's not hard to see why. While throughout this entire primary we've had confident establishment voices telling us Trump was just a boomlet or a phrase and that the voters would come to their senses any day now-they aren't even paying attention yet!-it's becoming tougher to deny that, yes, Trump certainly could win this.
As Steve Schmidt puts it, there's this illusion that there's this secret group of people who can control this process. I guess this the Kasich group is bidding to be this secret group now.

GOP group plans most aggressive anti-Trump campaign yet
A pro-Kasich super PAC is on a mission to take down the real estate mogul once and for all.
John Kasich has attacked Donald Trump relentlessly in debates and now his super PAC is planning to invest $2.5 million in the most aggressive takedown of the poll leader yet — on behalf of an increasingly anxious GOP establishment.
The attack, according to a blueprint shared with POLITICO, will play out over the next two months on radio, TV, mail and online in New Hampshire. Strategists with the pro-Kasich group, called New Day for America, say the budget for the anti-Trump campaign is likely to grow.
The offensive comes as some in the GOP are beginning to plot how to combat the real estate mogul and entertainer, who many are convinced would essentially deliver the White House to Democrats if he were the nominee. In launching the effort, the group hopes to position Kasich, who has lagged in the Republican contest and is searching for momentum, as a central Trump antagonist.
“We will be the tip of the spear against Trump,” said Matt David, a spokesman for the super PAC.
Rather than go after Trump for his business dealings or his past support for liberal causes, as some of his opponents have tried to do, the super PAC will depict Trump as someone who would be a deeply ineffective commander-in-chief and ill-suited for the demands of the Oval Office.

Kasich may have attacked him relentlessly in debates-you certainly have to agree he's tried. How effective has he been? The polls don't show him as being so effective. Kind of makes you think of Trump's jibe about how everyone who attacks him relentlessly sees their numbers fall into the toilet.
Is this Kasich group basically taking one for the team here-I mean Team GOP Establishment? The reality is that in a race with so many candidates-and with four clear leading candidates-Trump, Carson, Rubio, Cruz-that Kasich isn't close to being-even if this campaign were successful there's no reason to suspect it would help him.
At this point, to the contrary, it seems pretty clear at this stage that Rubio is positioned as the main establishment candidate. What Kasich's group is trying to do here is pretty tricky. It's basically a campaign trying to change the tastes of GOP voters from say anything outsiders to the establishment candidates. It's a tough sell.
And Trump has dominated the polls without any reliance on tv ads. As he says, he'd attack Kasich but at 2%, he's hardly worth the trouble.
Overall, it's easy to see why the Establishment is freaking out. There was some hope that the Paris attacks would lead voters to focus on those with the right Presidential temperament to be Commander in Chief.
But this hasn't happened. In fact Trump's numbers seem to have jumped since Friday to it's highest level yet as Carson seems to be fading somewhat.

And considering the main GOP reaction has been to tamp down on Syrian refugees, Trump is the natural choice. Who is better at that than him? He's again shown that no one will run to his Right on anti Muslim furor by saying that national ID cards for Muslims may well be necessary-that all kinds of things that would have been unthinkable a year ago, are now thinkable.

It seems to me that between Trump's rising poll numbers and the latest shock over an Islamic database the Establishment is genuinely freaking.
P.S. If you want to actually talk policy, this is the real problem with Kasich's attack on Trump. He's said repeatedly that Trump's talk about deporting 11 million people is nuts.

Here's the problem: he advocated the same thing in his successful bid for Ohio Governor in 2010. So the only real difference is style not substance.

I'm sure if you look you'll discover that the national ID thing isn't invented by Trump either-indeed, what happened here is a reporter speculated about this possibility. But of course Ray Kelly, as NYPD Commissioner soon after 9/11 targeted Muslims.
