I think this encapsulates their problem perfectly.
"The Republican National Committee is having some fun with a national press corps they like to complain leans left, making every reporter to type in “StopHillary” to access the wireless network at the fourth Republican presidential debate."
“We like to force the media to understand that there’s two parties at every chance we get,” RNC Chairman Reince Priebus told POLITICO.

I think this shows the exact problem with the modern GOP. Even the night of their own debate they want to focus on the Democrats. Think about it, you're running for President and you have the chance to win me over and you're method is to talk about who you're running against. Tonight;s the GOP debate yet they want the media to discuss the Democrats.
They don't want the focus on what they can do but about the real or imagined shortcomings of the Democrats. Now I say the 'modern GOP' has this problem: I define the modern GOP as the post New Deal GOP that never accepted the New Deal consensus. This is true today as the entire field is running on some plan or other to phase out Medicare though they can never say that in so many words.
The GOP remains Nixonian. I've written about this. Nixon road the 1946 Republican wave election. This though was after the Dems had controlled all three Houses of government since 1932.

This wave was good and bad news for the GOP. The good news is they found a way to win in the New Deal era. The bad news was their win wasn't in any way ideological. They had not moved the public one inch off supporting the New Deal.
What worked for them was simply attacking Democratic opponents personally, red baiting, etc.
This same Spirit is here even at tonight's GOP debate. We have seen recent signs that suggest the GOP is scarcely even a party anymore with dysfunction in the House and in the primary race.
Priebus is kiidding himself here:
"Tuesday’s GOP faceoff is the Republicans’ fourth of the 2016 campaign. So far, the Democrats have held only one debate, and the next three are on weekends when TV viewership tends to be much lower. “They’re having a coronation,” Priebus said of the Democrats. “We actually have a real contest and that’s the difference. We have ... a lot of good candidates and they’ve got a couple bad ones and candidates that don’t actually want to debate.”

Please. No party in its right mind would trade the GOP position with the Democrats. In truth, if party leaders had their way it'd always be a coronation. All the GOP candidates just highlight that their is no agreement on anything on the GOP side this time.
The 'coronation' is good news for the Dems-it means there is a great unity of purpose. That's what a party is supposed to have.
The fact that even the Republicans find Hillary more interesting than their own candidates says it all.
