We all of our opinions but like Keynes said of markets, who won the GOP debate is also a kind of beauty pageant where you have to figure out not just who you think won but what the insiders or the base think happened.
What the insiders surveyed by Politico doesn't wildly contradict my take on it this time. They think Rubio won and Kaisch lost. I agree he had the worst night. I thought Jeb did better but I'm not sure it was enough based on where he was.
If you have an F average and get a C on the latest exam you still aren't doing great. I think Carly Fiorina's performance was largely forgettable.
As for Rubio, I think he probably had a pretty good night. I find his memorized and panned responses grating but he's good at them and, after all, the moderators treated him with kid gloves.
"Mr. Rubio was not only able to avoid being drawn into the contentious immigration debate, but also repeatedly received questions that allowed him to answer with versions of his stump speech. Even he seemed unable to believe his good fortune when he was asked to make his case against Mrs. Clinton. He chuckled for a moment before unspooling a well-rehearsed argument: why he can prosecute a “generational” case against her."
“If I am the nominee, they will be the party of the past, and we will be the party of the 21st century,” said Mr. Rubio, 44.

Call it the Rubio Rules-no tough questions. Just softballs he can show off his stump speech on. I do agree with Politico's insiders that if Rubio did well, it wasn't earth shattering.
"But several respondents from both sides of the aisle who said Rubio had a good night also argued that while they saw him as the winner, it wasn’t a blow-out performance — other candidates also had solid showings."
“Several candidates had a good night, but Rubio had strong substance and presentation,” a South Carolina Republican said. “Jeb was probably good enough to stop some of his bleeding.”
"Added a Nevada Democrat who selected Rubio, “Rubio, Trump, Bush, Paul and Cruz all seem to have held their own, but I wouldn't say there was a clear winner.”

I thought Rand Paul had a pretty good night. I of course, enjoyed him going after Rubio.
I though Ted Cruz had a good night as well as he came to Trumps aide against Jeb and Kasich.
I also will buy the insiders belief that Kasich lost the debate. He has had this unhinged quality in the last few debates.
As for the biggest loser of the night, 38 percent of Republican insiders pointed to Ohio Gov. John Kasich.
“Looked completely unhinged and out of touch with GOP electorate,” a New Hampshire Republican said.

“Petulant is not a winning strategy,” said another.
Kasich had a contentious evening, as the moderate conservative tussled with Donald Trump over immigration reform and was booed when he suggested there was room for government involvement in saving big banks from going under.
“Kasich's awkwardness was on full display, and his ideas are getting lost in the power of his peevishness,” a South Carolina Republican said.
“He was whining about not getting to speak, but actually had one of the highest [speaking] times,” said a non-partisan respondent from Iowa. “He came across as angry and kept trying to inject himself in the conversation. Not a good night for him.”
