Chris Christie Endorses Donald Trump

I have to say that I was surprised about this one.

Nate Silver is very impressed by Rubio's debate performance last night.

http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/marco-rubio-finally-steps-up-as-the-anti-trump/

But I'm with Josh Marshall. Trump was dominant last night. When you consider his being attacked by Rubio and Cruz relentlessly on both sides, he looked pretty strong which is what his campaign is all about.

It's amazing how invested Nate and friends are in a Rubio win to validate their party decides theory. I agree with the theory in general. Just adjust it: healthy parties decide. But can after all this Nate seriously tell us this is a healthy party?!

Rubio is now going around saying Trump wet his pants last night. So what's clear is that Trumpian tactics have won the day no matter what.

Meanwhile the Rubio Slayer himself, Chris Christie, is back for Rubio. Maybe Trump will have him as a surrogate. LOL.

"On, Friday afternoon, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie threw a curveball into the race by backing Trump. During a press conference announcing the surprise endorsement, both Trump and Christie attacked Rubio repeatedly — including about makeup.

"He was putting it on with a trowel," Trump said about Rubio applying makeup backstage.

And it was Rubio, not him, who had the "meltdown" at the GOP debate in New Hampshire, Trump said. "That was one of the epic meltdowns. He didn’t know where he was, I thought he was going to die."

"He's desperate," Trump continued, referring now to Rubio's reading of his tweets. "I watched a part of his little act and he's a desperate guy. ... He is not presidential, that I can tell you. ... He is a nervous nelly. ... I've never seen a human being sweat like this man sweats."

Christie chimed in with his own attacks, calling Rubio part of the "D.C. establishment" and painting him as a hypocrite: "I find it fascinating that someone who barely shows up for work ... is going to talk about somebody else being unprepared."

So what does this tell Nate Silver about what the party is deciding?

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie endorsed presidential frontrunner Donald Trump on Friday in a stunning announcement that adds fuel to the real estate mogul’s runaway campaign.

"I am proud to be here to endorse Donald Trump for president of the United States," Christie said, as he stood beside Trump and made his case for why his prior rival is the best candidate for the Republican nomination."

"A day earlier Christie had been saying to some close to him that he was going to stay neutral in the primary. He started making some of those close to him aware of his plans Friday morning. Others didn't know that the endorsement was coming at all."

"I am shocked," Ray Washburne, the governor's former presidential campaign finance director said right after Christie endorsed Trump.

"Republicans in Christie's orbit were shocked by the news. The knee jerk read by others was that this endorsement was really about Hillary Clinton."

"Gov. Christie is looking at the political playing field and understanding that this is the one person who it looks like can beat Hillary Clinton," a former adviser on Christie's campaign said. "I mean he's looking at the political playing field, understanding that this is the person who can beat Hillary Clinton. This is the likely nominee. This is someone who has demonstrated that he knows how to lead and that's why Gov. Christie is getting behind him. I'm just going to leave it at that."

"Christie aides and advisers said in the last few weeks he had been hit up for an endorsement by Ohio Gov. John Kasich's team and also had minimal conversations with Sen. MArco Rubio's team and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush's team before Christie dropped out."

"The reaction to Christie’s endorsement was swift. Tim Miller, Jeb Bush’s former spokesman, lit up Twitter with cutting comments. “Like Trump, Chris Christie is a pathetic, corrupt man with a tiny ego. I'm sure they bonded discussing their insecurities over a big meal,” he tweeted.

"Bush strategist David Kochel also laced into Christie. “New lesson kids: sometimes, the best option for the fat kid is to just hand his lunch money over to the bully! #TrumpChristie2016,” he said on Twitter."

"And 2012 presidential nominee Newt Gingrich said on Twitter that the Christie announcement is a big message about the future of the race. “This Chris Christie endorsement of Trump is real signal to GOP establishment that they had better begin thinking about Trump as the future,” he said.

"Christie’s newfound support comes as Trump is increasingly looking like the unstoppable frontrunner, after three consecutive and decisive wins. Super Tuesday next week could all but lock down the nomination for Trump."

"The announcement interrupted a particularly nasty food fight between Marco Rubio and Trump, after Rubio launched an all-out assault on the real estate mogul during Thursday night’s debate."

"At the press conference, Trump tossed a few more insults Rubio’s way, accusing Rubio of slathering on the makeup backstage at Thursday night’s debate. "He was putting it on with a trowel," Trump said."

"But the bulk of the news conference was dedicated to the Christie news."

The New Jersey governor said he met with Trump on Thursday morning. “Yesterday morning I met with Donald, we sat and talked, and he said, 'How about coming out on the road to Texas with me?', and I said, 'Happy to do it, whenever you’re ready, sir.' So we did it, and that’s how the process went," he explained.

"Christie said he was not angling for a Cabinet position, like attorney general, remarking that he intended to retire to private life after his term as governor is up in January 2018. Statewide, Christie's approval rating hit a new low last December, making another statewide run for office unlikely."

Trump ought to use him as a surrogate often in the next few weeks as the Rubio Slayer.

I have to say I am surprised myself on this one. But there is surprised good and surprised bad and this is surprised very good. As Josh Marshall puts it the latest dead Rubes bounce is over:

"With the Christie endorsement and Trump's once-again dominance of the daily news cycle, I think we can say that the MSM's latest imaginary Rubio comeback last approximately eleven hours."

http://talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/dead-rubes-bounce

UPDATE: The futures seem to agree the dead cat bounce is over. I saw that Trump's chances dropped last night after the debate about 6 points from 71 percent to 65 percent but have now gone back to 69 percent. Rubio's have now fallen again.

For the Dems Hillary is now favored at 88.9 percent and Bernie is now down to 8.3 percent.

  4. Mike, what is the meaning of that little green thing they put on Christie's head here?:

I've seen them do that before, but I don't get the significance.

The last line is funny... maybe if you fix your title, you can say something like that: "This is HUGE! Chris Christie endorses Trump!" ... Lol

  5. I wonder if Trump can bring Christie with him to the next debate... keep him on a leash with one of those spiked collars ... just so he can sic him on Rubio.

  6. Jennifer Rubin is VERY disappointed with Christie today. She's basically done with the guy (she had been a fan).

And even though Levin hates Trump, he makes fun of "RINO" Rubin for being upset about Christie in his twitter.

    1. Not just a fan, but has personally interviewed him. I get the feeling she's dumping a friend.

    2. Christie seems to have already been pulling his-considerable in every sense-weight.

Paul LaPage is also endorsing Trump.

As a major GOP Gov, he can work the phones

  7. It looks like there is a war of words between Levin and Rubin. The charmed life of a Trump Democrat!

    1. I saw. Rubin let loose with a torrent of anti-Christie tweets too. This was the harshest:

So many to choose from! She was already to celebrate a weekend of Rubio cheering, and now it sounds like she was stabbed in the face by a friend.

She's mad at Levin because he pushed Trump for 6 months... of course Levin didn't like that being thrown in his face. I hope they hate each other to the grave.

    3. Think about how she'd be singing Christie's praises if he'd endorsed Rubio instead! She wouldn't care about all the inconsistencies ... all his prior attacks on Rubio.

Meanwhile at "The Resurgent" (Erickson) they're again making blood oaths not to support Trump. They started the #NeverTrump hash tag and "went on record" yet again. I think it really galls Erickson most of all because Trump likes Planned Parenthood. That's unforgivable for him. That's why I want to see what Erickson would do if he had a few zygotes implanted in him. Would he sneak in the back door of PP, home of the "baby murderers" ... or would he bring them to term. 1000:1 he'd sneak in PP.

I'm happy to see all this anti-Trump noise from him... but at the same time I find EE's face almost as punchable as Ted Cruz's. I'm just filled with aggression everytime I look at his visage. Oh well, just me I guess.

Maybe politics will get to be too much of a downer for that crowd... and they'll take up gardening or something. One can always hope.

    4. Erickson is disappointed that he had such a simple formula worked out:

Planned Parenthood = "baby murderers" = "Satanic evil"

And Trump is pooping on it. He's doing inconvenient things like telling the truth about it: they do a LOT more than abortions. Erickson doesn't like to have his nice neat message, tailor made for a brain dead audience, ruined like that.

I would love to read a psychological assessment of what it is about abortion service providers and women's health clinics in general that drives right wingers into such a tizzy.

It wasn't always like that. In the early 1970s there were some prominent conservative evangelical leaders who supported abortion. What happened? What causes their derangement? They literally don't give a FUCK about the kids should they actually be born, but before that... totally different story.

He calls the head of PP "Dr. Mengele." His disdain for Tom Ridge is based primarily on him being pro-choice, and thus, in EE's view, he basically splashed a drum of innocent baby blood all over Kasich with his endorsement.

Do you have any guesses Mike? Greg? What in the hell is going on here? What's REALLY happening in their brains on this issue? I used to think it was just about sex: they're in love with the idea of God punishing loose women with pregnancy... basically the same reason they were against AIDS research... Don't mess with God's punishment of the gays!... but I think it's more than that. I really don't understand.

    5. Does EE have a daughter?... what would he do if she got knocked up by a Satan worshiping black ex-con drug dealer? With a tattoos on his face saying "Fuck God! Jesus = Faggot! Kill Fetuses! Trump 2016!" Sounds delicious doesn't it?

      Delete
    6. ... can you imagine the Erickson household at Thanksgiving, should this young man become a part of the family?... passing the mashed potatoes with "Jesus = Faggot" prominently displayed on his forehead. What would Erick do? Make him wear a gimp mask? Lol...

    7. ... well I know Cruz has daughters... a little too young, but one day it could happen.

    8. Here's EE on "saving the supreme court." He's proud to be associated with a new group called "The Judicial Crisis Network."
      http://theresurgent.com/saving-the-supreme-court/

Now what is this "crisis?" Two things: guns and abortion. Maybe gays too. Guns, gals, gays. For EE, I think mostly abortion. What if they conclude supporting Trump is the best way to save the SC? Lol. Will EE drop them?

I'm going to float another answer to my question above: about why abortion is such an obsession. It started out a cynical ploy to bring Catholics and Protestants under the GOP. Catholics had always been pro-life, and Protestants more pro-choice. Then the cynics figured making abortion a big deal could bring Catholics in on their side. Eventually it took on a life of it's own. Fanatics now think that abortion is basically the same as torturing Jesus now. I suspect that Erickson and like-minded abortion-obsessed loons, actually think God will smite us if they are allowed to continue. That we're living in a nation which is literally "God-damned." Same goes for gays. Giving gays rights brings God's wrath against us. What do you think?

  8. Mike, will you wear a Trump-Christie 2016! T-shirt in public? To the gym?

  9. During the primary, sure. Not in the general. I do wear my 'Making America Great Again' t-shirt religiously to the gym.

But I also have a Hillary 2016 bumper sticker already!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Tom everything is coming up roses. On the prediction site, HRC is now 90.5 percent, Bernie is down to 8.2 percent.

Trump is now up to almost 75 percent-so higher now than before the debate and Rubio is down to under 19 percent

Meanwhile in the general, Hillary is now over 56 percent.

  13. BTW, Bill Maher's monologue on the debate and aftermath was hilarious! He said it looked like a disgusting "Cuban sandwich" on stage... a Cuban on either side, and a big cheesy orange ham in the middle.

He said the shouting and name calling got so out of control, poor Dr. Carson barely got any sleep.

... and that the Real Housewives scolded them: "Guys, please! A little dignity."
