It's interesting to contemplate their differences.
A). Bernie supporters tend to be
1. Younger
2. Whiter
3. More male
4. More idealistic
5. More Independents rather than Democrats
B). Hillary supporters tend to be
1. Older
2. People of color-Latinos and especially African-Americans
3. Considerably more female
4. More pragmatic
5. Are mostly Democrats.
We sometimes hear that Bernie is generating all this excitement. Where are Hillary's crowds? Well you see her generating plenty of excitment when she's speaking to her base-African-American audiences.

When she was in Flint, Michigan or at her major speech in Harlem last week , there you had a fired up crowd with shouts of 'We love you Hillary.'
Meanwhile Bernie has had some tough days speaking to black audiences.

The excitement Bernie gets before his millennial white crowds just isn't there.
1. There's no question that 1 and 4 are related: as you get older you get more pragmatic. Not that I think of myself as old-LOL. I'm just a young whippersnapper of 44.
But no doubt, when it's not your first rodeo, you tend to understand the drill better. Garry Wills once defined being young as seeing the evil in the world as being purely external. It's a certain belief in one's own more purity. Becoming disabused of this is part of adulthood.

For me, I don't feel see why young folks see Bernie as so trustworthy. He sounds like a telemarketer promsing all these wonderful things with no tradeoffs.
2. POC and women tend to be more pragmatic. If you're a black person right now, you have a real tangible fear of the rise of voter id laws and the recent gutting of the Voting Rights Act by the Roberts Court. If you're Latino, you have similar real worries about immigration reform and the backlash against Latinos.
3. What all this does is mean that if you're a person of color or a woman, it is vital for you that a Democrat win the Presidency in 2017, full stop.
A lot of the Bernie folks tend to dismiss the importance of a Democrat winning. They'd rather go for who they see as the True Progressive even if that means a lesser chance of victory in 2017.
That again goes to the fact that they are more white, male, less Democratic, and less pragmatic.
Indeed, there is a Bernie or Bust argument which says that it'd be better to have four years of a GOPer than Hillary as a True Progressive can get in 2020.
This argument got louder after Nevada loss.

In it's original form-I believe it was first printed in Salon-argued that there probably will be more SJC vacancies to fill post 2020. A dangerous rolling the dice which has proven false already with Scalia's unexpected demise.
But again, if you are a young white male, issues over the VRA, a woman's right to choose, or immigration reform might be of less concern for you than 'real issues' over Glass-Steagall.

Mike, have you seen this video of a disheartened Bernie supporter? I don't even mean to make fun of her. I just found it interesting. Captivating even.
ReplyDeleteYou don't mean to. I, however, may have less noble intentions...
ReplyDeleteYou have done well, Sir.
LOL
Yes, Rush talked about this today but thinks her video may be 'fake.'

Ok, so there's nothing really to laugh at there.
What was kind of funny though is the video after of Bernie in Greenville SC with Ben Jealous talking about black issues in front of a totally white audience. That was worth laughing at.

I thought she was crying because Bernie was losing not because she talked to Trump folks...
ReplyDeleteO/T: Mike, being an abortion rights champion, you might get a kick out of this: occasionally I like to troll Y/A with stupid questions. I think you might like this one.
ReplyDeleteAlso, regarding that crying Bernie-girl, I found that on that white supremacist site I linked you too the other day... the pro-Trump one, where they disparaged "cuckservatives" like Erick Erickson for being too soft on Jews and non-whites.
The general agreement in the comments over there was that she was a fine looking white lass... nobody would have kicked her out of bed, even though she was a Bernie-girl. They just thought that she should be crying out her precious white-eyes over something more appropriate, like a dead puppy or something adorable like that. Lol.
