On Trump and Jorge Ramos

The Latino media is outraged how Trump treated Ramos last night.

"Univision news anchor Jorge Ramos told CNN on Wednesday that Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump threw him out of a Tuesday evening press conference because "he didn't like the question" and that Trump was "out of line."

"Trump called on a reporter to ask a question and Ramos interrupted the other reporter to ask Trump how he would deport undocumented immigrants under his proposed immigration policy."

"Trump repeatedly told Ramos to sit down and said, "Go back to Univision," before security removed the news anchor from the press conference."

"He was out of order. I would take his question in two seconds, but he stood up and started screaming," Trump said later in the press conference, before Ramos returned to the media event. "He's obviously a very emotional person."

"Ramos told CNN on Wednesday in a live phone interview that "obviously" Trump didn't like his question."

"The one that's out of line is Donald Trump," Ramos told CNN host Chris Cuomo.

"Usually, the reporters ask questions after they're called on, Cuomo told Ramos."

"I wanted to have an interview with Donald Trump," Ramos said. "He hasn't been giving us answers and this is very important to the Hispanic community and this is personal. As reporters, our responsibility is to ask questions and he hasn't answered those questions," Ramos said.

"Cuomo asked Ramos if he was "too personal," and the Univision host responded that the best journalists take a stance on certain topics."

"The fact is that, as a reporter, I believe you have to take a stance when it comes to racism, discrimination, corruption, public life, dictatorship and human rights," Ramos said. "The best of journalism that we've seen, and that you've seen Chris, is always when reporters take a stance in front of those who are in power. I think the most important social responsibility as a reporter is to prevent and denounce the abuse of those who are in power. That's when you see the best journalists."

"He didn't like the question. That's why he threw me out," Ramos said.

I understand why Trump got like that. Recall when he said that Bernie Sanders looked weak by letting a couple of young girls take his mic and shut him down. Trump wasn't going to let that happen to him.

No doubt the way Ramos went about it is part of what grated. If he had waited to be called on maybe it wouldn't have gone that way but implicit in the way he simply started shouting everyone else down was that what he wanted to ask was more important than what others did.

Still, at the end of the day you have the optics of Trump telling the 'Latino Walter Cronkike'-go back to Univision-with echos of Go back to Mexico.

And you can't blame Ramos for being upset as Trump has proposed some truly awful policies.

"The New York Times reports that the Latino media is covering Donald Trump extremely aggressively, and crucially, the focus is very much on his statements and policy pronouncements about immigration:"

"About 58 percent of mentions of Mr. Trump in mainstream news media — broadcast, cable, radio and online outlets — in the past month have focused on immigration, while on Spanish-language news programs, the proportion is almost 80 percent, according to an analysis by Two.42.Solutions, a nonpartisan media analytics company."

"What remains to be seen is whether Trump’s bluster will color Latinos’ views of the GOP, and how far the eventual nominee will have gravitated towards his positions along the way."

Latinos hate Trump-he is now negative 50 in favorability among them. But this is what worries me:

"U.S. Hispanics are still getting to know most of the Republican contenders for president. At this point in the campaign, less than half have formed an opinion of any Republican candidate except Donald Trump and Jeb Bush. Partly because of this, Hispanics' views of most GOP candidates range from mildly positive to mildly negative. The sole exception is Trump, whose favorable rating with Hispanics is deeply negative."

In a way this is very disappointing. Latinos should not just be hating Trump but the entire GOP field which have all in varying degrees supported Trumpism.

None of his ideas-the wall, even ending birthright citizenship is new. Rand Paul has written a bill that calls for just that,

A number of Republicans have.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/a-good-chunk-of-gop-field-wants-to-repeal-the-14th-amendment_55d24915e4b055a6dab12015

"We’ve been through the GOP’s birthright citizenship eruptions before. As far back as 1993, then-Congressman John Kasich co-sponsored a bill to end birthright citizenship. By 2010, FOX News Contributor-turned-candidate for Governor Kasich had continued his crusade against citizen children. That yearLindsey Graham joined Kasich when he responded to Democrats’ push for comprehensive immigration reform by accusing that immigrant mothers “drop and leave” their children in the U.S.

"The following year, in 2011, Senator Rand Paul introduced a resolution to amend the constitution and end birthright citizenship. By 2013, one of the vilest terms in Latino politics was born when Republican CongressmanSteve King introduced a bill to end “anchor babies” – the disgusting term some Republicans use to describe U.S. citizen children born to immigrant parents."

"This summer the GOP has again shifted their attack from immigrants, to immigrant families, to the U.S. citizen children of immigrant parents. Just last week Chris Christie, not once but twice, called for the reexamination of the 14th Amendment, or “birthright citizenship”. Scott Walker told a reporter he would flat out end birthright citizenship as president. On the campaign trail, Ted Cruz has refused to say whether he supported Steve King’s proposal to eliminate birthright citizenship. Here’s a rundown of what some of the rest of the GOP field has said about birthright citizenship."

"And Jeb himself has flirted with the idea and hasn't ruled it out absolutely. He at least agreed that 'anchor babies' -his word are a real problem and that there is abuse by Mexicans coming to America just to give birth."

I have no problem with Latinos hating Trump but why not also Rand Paul,, Chris Chrsitie, and Ted Cruz?

Even the 'Nice Republcian' Kasich has called for ending birthright citizenship. So why hate Trump rather than the whole field?

I wish that Ramos and the Latino media would cast their net a little wider.

  1. Well, hopefully Trump will stay in it long enough to force his competition to "attack from the right." Once they realize that attacking from the left won't do any good with the base, as it is today. By that time more people might be paying attention. You have to remember that you're a political junkie. Most people probably just don't care at this time.

  3. Well if Trump wins the nomination-and he leads every poll and on every policy by a lot-the GOP prefers him 44% to 9% for Jeb on the economy-then Trump's horrible numbers with Latinos will be perfect.

The other Repulbicans have already said plenty of things where if Ramos and others were listening he shouldn't just be criticizing Trump.

I just wrote a new post that shows that Kasich-Mr. Nice Republican-has supported ending birthright citizenship for over 20 years.

Why is John Kasich so popular with Latinos?

But there's a lot of time to go. Hillary is much more popular with Latinos than anyone in the GOP.

There are other metrics to look at besides one poll

  4. See right there the title makes me wary. 'Trump has stopped being funny'-it sounds like she's going to get hand-wringy.

She should be hand-wringy over the whole GOP party not just Trump. Getting rid of him isn't going to fix the problem of bigotry and nativism. I Just wrote a piece about Charles Blow calling for a boycott of Trump.

    Totally disagree with him.

  5. Sorry for some reason I thought the author was female. Maybe because there was a woman's face at the top of the page and I assumed she was the author.

It's a terrible thing that happened but this hatred is there. It isn't created by Trump. I refuse to going back to the usual Jeb Bush hypocrisy is going to end bigotry.

The way to put a stop to this is victory at the ballot box and Trump gives us-those of us who are Democrats-a much better shot.

  6. See now this is dead wrong:

"Karl Rove and his acolytes mined a lot of the same resentments to get Republicans elected over the years, but the difference is that Trump's political style encourages people to do more to express their anger than just vote. The key to his success is a titillating message that those musty old rules about being polite and "saying the right thing" are for losers who lack the heart, courage and Trumpitude to just be who they are."

Yes it's ok if people vote for terrible things as long as they are hypocritical about it. Wrong. This is better because now the GOP has no plausible deniability and maybe will finally be voted out.

I see this kind of hand-wringing as part of Krugman's Very Serious People. They are happy with the GOP dominated status quo on immigration as long as we don't talk about it in mixed company.

  7. Now I know I'm going off a little halfcocked Tom but to me all Talabai is saying 'Bigotry is fine as long as we do it behind closed doors.'

But the victim of this bigotry are worse off this way as it's harder to document and combat.
