Not that I have it in for Jerry Reese but I don't buy that this team is a 12-4 team without Tom Coughlin. The team has a few great players-Eli Manning and Odell Beckam. But they need shoring up in many other positions-certainly a defense that was 32nd in passing yards and overall yards given up all year.
But the consensus seems to be that Coughlin is gone-that he'll probably 'resign'-of course, if he doesn't resign, he'll be fired. But I'm serious about Reese. I'd love to hear the reason he deserves to come back but Coughlin doesn't. The only answer I've heard is that this is not how the Giants do things. They don't fire a long time GM for nonperformance only a long time coach?
Nor have the list of possible coaches I've heard been very impressive-other than maybe Sean Payton. But then his record is sort of like Coughlin's-he had the Super Bowl with New Orleans back in 2009, but the last few years the Saints haven't been good.
Other than that, we have a long list of college coaches some who have failed in the NFL already. Ok. so Coughlin has 'failed' the last few years but none of these coaches have succeeded at the NFL level either. Do you know how many failed NFL coaches fit the profile of a guy who has a great college record and has never coached in the league?
According to the conventional wisdom, Ben McAdoo-the Giants offensive coordinator that Coughlin brought in is not a serious candidate.
"It would be an impossible sell to fans, to replace a legendary coach with one of his assistants, especially since the Giants are only 12-19 in McAdoo's two years as offensive coordinator. But ideally the Giants would prefer to stay in-house. John Mara has also told people he views McAdoo as a future head coach, and that he has Coughlin-like qualities. He might've been ideal if Coughlin could've pulled off one more winning season before smoothly passing the reins."

Listen, I sure hope this is not just about pleasing the fans in the short term. I say this as a guy who loves this football team the way I love the Democratic party in politics.
The Giants need more players. Full stop. If we are lacking in that department how does Reese get a pass?
I don't get how McAdoo is an impossible sell. I'm a fan and you don't have to sell me on him at all-he's been great. Sure the team doesn't have a great record but since when is that how you grade assistants?
The correct metric for him is not the W-L record but how Eli and the offense preformed before he was here and the last two years. What happened this year was not the fault of the offense which scored 420 points-good enough for 4th in the NFC and 7th in the NFL.
The culprit was a defense which gave up the second most points in the NFL with 442.
You have to rewind to Eli's 2013 season where had had the worst season in his career-only 18 TD passes and 27 interceptions. In 2014 he rebounded for the best statistical year of his career with 30 TDs and just 14 pics and this year he was even better with 35 TDs and again just 14 pics.
The Giants were at least in almost every game and this was because of Eli''s production-and of course his great weapon, Odell Beckam.
Ok, so yesterday was a microcosm for the whole season. The Giants fell behind early 14-3 and 21-13, but battled back in a strong 3rd quarter to take a 27-21 lead They were then driving for another score but then Eli through his one pic of the game inside the Eagles 10 that was run all the way back for a pic six.
The Giants lost 35-30. It was very similar to most of their games-they had every opportunity to win but found a way to lose. They scored a lot of points but gave up even more. They blew their first game of the season 27-26 in Dallas after holding a 23-13 lead with 5 minutes left in the game. For the season they averaged over 26 points per game but gave up just short of 28 per game.

If there was a silver lining, it was the great game for Rashad Jennings who had 170 yards and a TD off 27 carries. For most of the year, the Giants's running game was nonexistent, putting all the pressure on the Eli to Odell Beckam show.
This is one area I agree you can criticize the coaching on-the Giants seemed to think running back by committee was a great strategy. Presumably, Jennings has changed that. If he can produce for the season the way he did the last 3 games of the year, this will take a lot of pressure off of Eli and Odell.
