Eli Manning gets What the Giants Need

What they need to get them to the next level is some more players-not necessarily a fired head coach.

"Eli Manning has never played a game in his NFL career without Tom Coughlin as his head coach — a streak that looks likely to come to an end soon."

“Whether it is or not, he’s been a great coach early on in my career, just teaching me the importance of preparation and making me draw up every single blitz that the team had done each and every week,” Manning said. “He’s been a great influence on me.”

"Despite what changes figure to be in store following another disappointing season for the Giants, Manning said he hoped the team’s offense doesn’t change much after Sunday’s 35-30 loss to the Eagles at MetLife Stadium."

"I feel very comfortable in the offense,” Manning said after his relatively strong performance under center that ended in the latest defeat. “We scored a lot of points. We were competitive in most of the games and I thought we had a great game plan. I think with the guys we have and add a few guys, we can be a strong offense.”

Absolutely right. If Couglin is done, Bob McAdoo should be the guy-even if the conventional wisdom seems to be that they can't have him as he's a Coughlin. Yes, Eli is right. To get rid of McAdoo-which might be the reality if you get rid of Coughlin-the new coach would presumably get his own offensive coordinator-would be a huge mistake when you see the progress Eli and the offense have made the last two years under McAdoo.

Yes the teams haven't had good records but the offense scored 380 points last year and 420 this year. Meanwhile Eli has had his two best years stats wise in 2014 and 2015. Eli probably has three more Eli years-going by the historical averages.

Why wrench him out of a winning system rather than get him a few more good guys? Others seem to get this too, like Gary Gramling:

"Similarly, I hope the Giants hang onto Tom Coughlin. The roster just isn’t good enough. On offense, they are devoid of weapons outside of Odell Beckham. On defense, their one game-changer blew his hand off during the offseason. Up the middle they are terrible, once again (foolishly) relying on Jon Beason to stay healthy and trotting out a couple of safeties who just don’t cut it. Talent-wise they were a six- or seven-win roster. If not for some late-game mismanagement, they might have won nine or 10. And late-game management, while frustrating, is correctable."

I actually think that firing Coughlin could be a big mistake-if this means also getting rid of McAdoo. From what I've seen, there aren't many great coaching applicants out there. If you can coax Jim Harbaugh out of college, maybe you look at that. Otherwise, I'm convinced-ignore all the bloodthirsty media folks who just want to see someone's head roll.

Stay the course-but get some more players. If Rasheed Jennings can produce over a season as he has the last few weeks, that would be a big boon to the offense.

UPDATE: Maybe Coughlin is not gone.

I hope not.
