A Nightmare for the GOP Establishment

The big news of the day came before the latest cage match called the GOP debate last night. It was a Wall St. Journal poll that more or less debunked a standing theory of the race.

That the Establishment simply needs to winnow and then the race is there for the taking. I've never really got that. I mean it surely would help if the Establishment could coalesce around a candidate which they are at this point nowhere near doing.

Jeb may not have a chance but he seems determined to at least take down Marco Rubio before he leaves the race. With all his money he may not leave for a real long time and that's a good thing-if you're a Trump Democrat. Anyone but Rubio.

"Republicans warn Bush team against harming Rubio."

‘Does he want his legacy to be that he elected Donald Trump,’ GOP strategist asks.

Well, his current legacy is that he elected his brother back when he put in the fix in the 2000 election in Florida.

Jeb's answer to this appeal from the party Establishment was to double down by calling Rubio 'short.'

But here's the rub. Even if you could convince Jeb, Christie and Kasich to leave now, it might not help Rubio enough to actually win the nomination.

"Matched against Cruz, Trump lost 51 percent to 43 percent. But against Rubio, Trump held a 7-point advantage, 52 percent to 45 percent. In a three-man race, Trump earned 40 percent, Cruz took 31 percent and Rubio finished with 26 percent.

That is chilling for the GOP. To be sure, Nate Silver would probably point out these are national polls. But it shows what we have seen all along-71 percent in this poll prefer Trump and Cruz to 26 percent for Rubio. At 71 percent to 26 percent it's' not even close.

All of this was only underscored last night:

"Trump Is Winning, And The GOP Can't Figure Out How To Stop Him
Trump and Cruz dominated the Charleston debate as the Republican race veered more sharply into the surreal."

"After Mitt Romney’s resounding defeat in the 2012 presidential election, the Republican National Committee commissioned a 97-page report that laid out “a path forward for the Republican Party to ensure success in winning more elections.”

"It sounded great."

"But its drafters probably didn’t envision that the GOP's “path forward” would involve its 2016 presidential front-runner arguing in a nationally televised debate that its second-place contender is ineligible to serve as president."

"That is precisely the attack Donald Trump launched against Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) on Thursday night, echoing the Birther 2.0 charge that he’s been test-driving lately against his Canadian-born competitor."

“You have a big lawsuit over your head while you’re running, and if you become the nominee, who the hell knows if you can serve in office,” Trump said to Cruz during one of many memorable exchanges in the debate, which aired on the Fox Business Network."

"That Trump’s prodding came across as somewhat routine tells you everything you need to know about the trajectory of the Republican campaign, which has often seemed more like an especially entertaining reality TV show than a campaign for the nation’s highest office. Trump is still winning. And none of the other Republican candidates knows how to slow him down."

Sometimes truth really is better than fiction.

  1. By the time the primary ends, I'd love to hear a victorious Trump promising his wildly cheering supporters to deport Cruz, Rubio, Jindal, McCain and Nikki Haley. And I hope the reason he gives is

    "Duh!! Just look at 'em!"

Trump should turn up the heat right now though and start calling Cruz "Rafael Eduardo Cruz" and calling Rubio "Marco Antonio Rubio." And refer to the both of them as los niños cubanos (or maybe just "the Cubano Boys"). In his ads he should replace the n in Antonio with ñ. Any image of them appearing in a Trump ad should depict their skin tones several shades browner than they actually are (like what was done with Obama). Accuracy is of zero concern.

Didn't Bush say something about Rubio's height (or lack of it)? Trump could built on that by referring to him as "El Chapo."
