What Bernie's Curt Dismissal of Planned Parenthood Shows

It again underscores that Bernie doesn't get it on women's rights, least of all a woman's right to choose. I haven't seen others highlight it, but I was struck last week at the Iowa Black and Brown Forum when Bernie flatly said that sexism is much less of a problem than racism is now.

He thinks we've made much more strides on women's rights. I couldn't disagree more. I think it's' the opposite. Consider the fact that when we had a chance to vote for the first black President or the first female President, it was decided that having the first black President was a bigger priority.

Now even in 2016 when Hillary mentions women's rights and women's issues, Bernie's supporters dismiss this as 'just identity politics.'

Because Hillary is a woman, for her to mention women's issues is dismissed as 'pandering.'

Bernie has been criticized on his stance on racism. He has modulated it somewhat but even so when you listen to Hillary vs. him on racial matters she gets it in a way that he just doesn't.

Again, it's not just the words, it's the level of depth in the two cases. If you notice Bernie's spiel, he has a very hard time discussing any issue that isn't immediately related to breaking up the big banks and campaign finance reform.

But while he has made some tentative steps on race, he really hasn't even begun on gender.

"The Sanders supporters who disrespect boundaries drawn by people who want to discuss politics without a flamewar. Who harass Planned Parenthood and the US Black Chamber of Commerce and the Human Rights Commission for endorsing Hillary Clinton. Who dox and harass individual people who don't support Sanders. Who tell people of color, especially women of color, that they are stupid and ignorant if they don't support Sanders, if they don't reflexively agree that he is the best candidate for them. Who harass marginalized people, in particular, on social media for criticizing Sanders' lack of intersectional analysis."

"The Sanders supporters who send shitty, rude, and sometimes outright threatening emails and tweets to people, especially people who are not straight white men, who have the unmitigated temerity to criticize Sanders. As if this is some kind of democracy or something."

The fact that he now simply dismisses Planned Parenthood because they didn't endorse him just again shows that in his mind, a woman's right to chose, like gun control is just a 'distraction'

No, Senator, this is not a distraction. A woman's right to choose-as well as her access to quality, affordable healthcare-has been effectively abolished for all intents and purposes in many red states.

As some feminists put it, the war against women is over and women lost.

"With the GOP's relentless attacks on Planned Parenthood, is was rather appalling to see Bernie simply dismiss them as 'the establishment.' I guess women are the establishment for the Bern seeing as sexism is solved and all that."

"Planned Parenthood and other progressive groups are calling out Bernie Sanders for referring to them as "part of the establishment," saying the Vermont senator needs to show a more explicit commitment to women's reproductive health."

"It's a little ridiculous to call an organization Congress and Republican presidential candidates have spent six months attacking ‘establishment’ — especially when Planned Parenthood health centers are out there every day ensuring millions of often marginalized Americans have access to basic reproductive health care,” Dawn Laguens, executive vice president of Planned Parenthood Action Fund told POLITICO in an email.

"Laguens said she was “disappointed” in Sanders’ comments."

“It's regrettable and surprising to hear Senator Sanders describe the very groups that fight on behalf of millions of often marginalized Americans — people who still have to fight for their most basic rights — as representing the ‘establishment,’” Laguens said.

On Tuesday night MSNBC host Rachel Maddow asked Sanders why Hillary Clinton was getting so many high-profile progressive endorsements when Sanders’ stance on issues like gay rights and reproductive choice “are very consistent, they should be very attractive to progressive groups.”

As I've said previously, if Bernie simply a protest candidate to highlight the issue of Wall St reform and campaign reform, then that's fine. But he has too little interest or depth of knowledge on too many important issues to be President.

Bernie Maniacs answer this points usually by arguing that 'he's prochoice like she is he just doesn't talk about it all the time.' Right but some issues in his mind are worth talking about all the time-like campaign finance reform.

So while he is nominally both prochoice and for campaign finance reform, one issue he can't shut up about and one he sees as a distraction to talk about it too much.

He may believe in choice in a nominal sense-he checks the right box for the Democratic party-but it doesn't seem to be any sort of priority whatsoever.

What he doesn't get is there are issues of gender and women's rights that is about more than just a footnote in a speech about campaign finance.
