Trey Gowdy May Have Just Confessed to a Federal Crime In Redacting Classified Info Himself

Even Michael Steele on Andrea Mitchell, this morning, had to admit that Benghazi Committee doesn't have a lot of credibility.

Even Rush Limbaugh doesn't think they'll lay a glove on HRC on Thursday.

Trey Gowdy says that the last few weeks have just been dreadful for him.

"Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC), the chair of the House Select Committee on Benghazi, said over the weekend that the accusations that his investigation is merely a partisan attack on Hillary Clinton have weighed on him."

"I would say in some ways these have been among the worst weeks of my life," Gowdy told Politico in an interview published on Sunday night. "Attacks on your character, attacks on your motives, are 1,000-times worse than anything you can do to anybody physically — at least it is for me."

Well his own comments yesterday may only make it worse for him as they contained a very important admission:

"In a month which has seen one republican leader after another step up to acknowledge that the party’s years-long investigation into Hillary Clinton’s handling of Benghazi and email has been nothing more than an attempt at influencing her poll numbers in the 2016 election, it now appears to be Trey Gowdy’s turn to come clean. He’s the republican congressman who is by default in charge of the Benghazi committee. And he just admitted to a game changer."

"Gowdy and the republican Benghazi committee have been attacking by using a variety of government documents which have been heavily redacted to the point that it’s never been entirely clear just what context they would be in if not for all of the redactions and blackouts. After democrats asked the CIA to declassify the documents so that the public could see what was really being presented, the CIA responded by stating that it had never asked for anything to be redacted. When questioned under pressure, Gowdy admitted that he himself decided to redact large portions of the documents based on his own personal judgment of what information he did or didn’t want the public to know."

"This comes after months of allowing the public to believe that the redacted portions were the work of the CIA. Legally, no one in congress has the authority to deem any information to be classified. This latest revelation, that the republicans altered the documentswithout telling anyone to essentially try to frame Hillary Clinton with misleading evidence – comes just days before Clinton is set to testify before Trey Gowdy’s committee – and gives her additional ammunition for discrediting the proceedings."

The revelation that he himself has been redacting documents that he has been improperly leaking is truly earth shattering. He may well find out that his next few weeks are worse than the last few.

Meanwhile for the first time Elijah Cummings, the ranking Democrat on the Benghazi Committee calls for its dissolution.

"Democrats on Monday aimed to knock down a number of what they called "wild Republican conspiracy theories about Secretary Clinton and Benghazi," just days before Hillary Clinton was scheduled to publicly testify before the select committee tasked with investigating the 2012 terror attacks."

"The House Select Committee on Benghazi's Democratic staff released a 124-page report that argued the more than 50 interviews and depositions given to the panel provided no evidence to support some claims put forward by Republicans about Clinton's response to the attacks on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Libya."

"Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD), the ranking Democrat on the committee, called for its dissolution for the first time in a statement accompanying the report."

“Republicans have now admitted repeatedly that they are spending millions of taxpayer dollars to damage Secretary Clinton’s campaign for president,” Cummings said in the statement. “This report shows that no witnesses we interviewed substantiated these wild Republican conspiracy theories about Secretary Clinton and Benghazi. It’s time to bring this taxpayer-funded fishing expedition to an end.”

UPDATE: A new Politico piece shows that Gowdy may have himself accidentally released a CIA source's name.

Yes, his last few weeks may end up looking like European Vacation compared with where it may go for him next.

  1. Sorry, this is old news but new news to me. Interesting, however it's not a crime in any way. Redacting a doc isn't altering it in the legal or common sense, and the net effect is to release less information than Intel agencies allowed, which is clearly not a crime. Misleading, but no crime here.

  2. Thanks for stopping by.

That was a long time ago. Whatever the exact specifics of all that-it was awhile ago-the important thing is that the Benghazi Committee has been completely discredited.

Just so you know, I have written a lot since then. LOL
