The media has every since that second debate especially been determined to call the end of the Trump surge. You know what John Sides and other political scientists say: it's all about discovery, scrutiny, decline.
The Beltway has been absolutely determined to presume that Trump will decline the question is just when. After all that's what happened to Rick Perry, Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich, to all the flavors of the month in 2012.
What they never explain is how do they know Trump is another flavor of the month? For a long time you can argue he was gaining from the press, but not since the last debate where the press has clearly been determined to put him in his place and show him who's boss-they in the press.
They decide who's a serious candidate and who's' not and what the laws of political gravity are, etc. They kept telling us that this or that comment by Trump was the end of his campaign but they felt that making fun of Carly Fiorina surely crosses some red line, to make fun of her is some kind of unpardonable sin.
So they saturated the public with all the talk about how she put him in his place for making negative comments about her face and surely this would lead her to soar as he crashed and burned. Except this is not what happened.
To be sure, she did see her poll numbers spike but the other part of the equation-Trump's fade kept being alluded to but never really happened. Ok, so his numbers were a little lower on average than his peak in September but he still led just about all the polls nationally and state by state across the board.
Carly's surge on the other hand proved to be short lived after it became clear what a congenital liar she is and just how bad her tenure at HP really is. There's no way to finesse it.
While Hillary has sometimes been slandered as Cruella Daville, it's clear that Fiorina is the real thing.

Now her numbers are lower than before her surge. She may be a high powered woman but she is not friend to her own gender with her lies about Planned Parenthood.

Meanwhile the media keeps talking as if Rubio has been on a surge. But this is just because surely there has to be a establishment candidate surging and Walker is gone and Jeb hardly seems up to the job. But the reality is nothing like this is happening. There simply is no Rubio surge. The media feels it should happen and still flatters itself that it can make it happen by simply saying it's happening-via self-fulfilling prophecy- but it surely hasn't happened yet.

The latest numbers show nothing of the kind. It shows Trump actually extending his lead over Carson compared with other similar recent polls and only Ted Cruz coming close to double digits.
"Donald Trump continues to lead the field nationally in the race to become the Republican nominee for president. Twenty-seven percent of Republican primary voters support Trump, giving him a six point lead over his closest competitor, neurosurgeon Ben Carson (21 percent)."
"The rest of the Republican field is in single digits, with Texas Senator Ted Cruz inching up into third place with nine percent, followed by Florida Sen. Marco Rubio with eight percent. Businesswoman Carly Fiorina and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush follow at six percent each. Former Governor Mike Huckabee has also slipped considerably since the summer, from eight percent in August to just two percent today."

So here's my theory of what's going on. The media keeps waiting for the Mitt Romney of the race to please stand up and based on the behaviour of his polls, Trump is actually Mitt Romney and this the media can't admit.
