Not Exactly Shocking: Paul Ryan Will Support the Deal

He made a nice little show of being outraged yesterday but it was always obvious what he would support this deal-which, after all, is for his benefit. Boehner is going to raise the debt ceiling and fund the government through 2017 so Ryan doesn't have to.

Despite talk of how 'the process stinks' he is in. To be sure what he identified as negative in the process was accurate: the GOP needs to stop the brinksmanship and waiting to the last second on raising the deb ceiling and it's good he said it.

"After sharply criticizing how it came together, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan announced he would support the budget deal Wednesday."

"What I’ve heard from members over the last two weeks is a desire to wipe the slate clean, put in place a process that builds trust, and start focusing on big ideas," Ryan said in a statement. "What has been produced will go a long way toward relieving the uncertainty hanging over us, and that’s why I intend to support it. It’s time for us to turn the page on the last few years and get to work on a bold agenda that we can take to the American people."

Again, you know I don''t praise GOPers too often but Ryan is making sense. I agree the GOP House is ungovernable but if anyone can get it done it sounds like it's him. As Greg Sargent said recently, the paradox is that even though Ryan is to the Right of Boehner he may do a considerably better job.

It's not saying much as Boehner has done a terrible job. I know he's kind of a likable guy on his own terms and you have to feel for him he's so happy to get rid of this job that he once said he needs like a 'hole in the head.'

But still, you live by the sword and die by the sword. This crazy Hastert Plus Rule of the House where nothing can pass with even minority GOP opposition was something he started. The Boehner Rule was even worse than the Hastert Rule.

The same scorched earth opposition he directed his members to give the President when he was the minority leader, ultimately got directed at him as Speaker. He reaped what he sowed.

Meanwhile, the GOP Presidential candidates tonight plan to use the deal as 'a pinata.'

Budget deal will be 'pinata' during GOP debate

The GOP presidential candidates are expected to attack it from every direction.

The bipartisan congressional budget deal will be an easy target for the GOP presidential field during Wednesday’s prime-time debate. And GOP leaders are bracing for their carefully crafted work to be treated like a punching bag."

Top Republicans fully expect the accord to spur a new round of attacks on Washington’s leaders during the Colorado debate, the same day that the House GOP is expected to endorse Paul Ryan for speaker. But they’re ready and willing to take the abuse, reasoning that a night of public flogging before tens of millions of viewers beats a fiscal catastrophe."

"And maybe it even gives some cover to the very candidates who are going to trash the agreement."

“If you’re running as an outsider, which most of them are, they are just going to attack whatever we are doing here,” said Sen. John Thune of South Dakota, the No. 3 Senate Republican. “Anybody who’s running as an elected member of Congress today in a presidential campaign … is a liability.”

Maybe this is why Rubio spends so little time doing his job in the Senate. If he is going to be a member of Congress at least he's a totally unproductive one.

P.S. Here's an apocalyptic piece that prophesies doom for GOP for debt deal. Bear in mind it's a an arch libertarian blog, The Federalist.

P.S.S. This just says it all about how this is the party of not governing.

"Sens. Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio and Rand Paul haven’t shown up for any of the briefings on the breakthrough deal, which would remove the threat of government shutdowns and a debt default past the election and into 2017. Indeed, all three GOP contenders have taken great pains this week to avoid any connection with the budget, and all said Tuesday they will oppose it and were already criticizing it publicly."

"On Tuesday, Cruz gave Republicans a taste of what to expect in Boulder, accusing Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker John Boehner of a “surrender” to President Barack Obama."

Not doing their jobs is a selling point.
