Nanute, my esteemed long time reader-he and Tom Brown are neck and neck for top reader! Tom leaves lots of comments but Nanute did by Amazon off my blog the other day! LOL-left his own comment with a link to Lawyers, Guns, and Money over the He kept us safe meme and framing.

The premise is that the GOP has successfully created the social meme that they are the party that will keep us safe so by definition W kept us safe: as he's a Republican. Full stop.
However, Jeb shows that he's not so adept at framing by allowing himself to be defined in terms of his brother.
"His fight with Donald Trump over 9/11 sums up what's wrong with Bush's candidacy."
"Why on earth would Jeb Bush want to get into an argument with Donald Trump over whether George W. Bush kept America safe? It's one of the many mysteries of this campaign season. It's also one of the many ways in which Jeb is shredding his reputation as the Bush that got away."
"Conventional political wisdom for decades was that had Jeb won the Florida governorship in 1994, the first time he ran for it and the same year W. won the job in Texas, the correct heir would have ascended to the Oval Office. But that myth is on the way to being busted, not least because it's become clear that George W. was a much savvier politician."

I said in a piece yesterday that the more Jeb talks about his brother the better it is. It just reeks of one member of the monarchy defending another. Everything about Jeb just reeks entitlement.
"In the past few days, one thing we’ve been reminded of, as Donald Trump and Jeb Bush have sniped at each other about whether George W. Bush “kept us safe,” is that the two men represent two different schoolyard types. Trump is the sort of bully who relies on a freewheeling instinct for the weaknesses of others—in this case, an opponent who is reduced to befuddled outrage whenever he is called on to speak publicly about his brother. Trump’s aim can be scattershot, but he can hurt. Jeb Bush is a more refined bully, who simply expects everyone to share his amazement that a person who doesn’t fit in would dare show up for a party or for a debate—the sort whose go-to insult is “weirdo.” “Does anybody actually blame my brother for the attacks on 9/11? If they do, they’re totally marginalized in our society,” Bush told Jake Tapper, on CNN’s “State of the Union.” Margins are not an area that Bush navigates comfortably. He repeatedly gives the unfortunate impression that he has never really listened to people who do not share his set of beliefs, and that he’s confused about why they are taken seriously. That doesn’t help when there are already concerns that the Presidency is caught in a closed dynastic loop. Indeed, nothing about this fight will reassure those who worry about Bush’s competence as a campaigner. Because another thing that Trump has illustrated is that Jeb Bush is an easy mark, and that he doesn’t even know why."

What can be more insular and clueless than to sniff that anyone who criticizes his brother is totally marginalized in 'our society'-as if he and most of us regular slobs in anyway move in the same society.
I agree, his brother would never have been so dumb. W never embraced his father the way Jeb has W. Indeed, W has no plans to publicly campaign for Jeb which shows he's not that stupid.

Interestingly W also doesn't like Ted Cruz.

Mike, did you see this piece by Jennifer Rubin today?
ReplyDelete"Jeb Bush’s big chance to knock out Donald Trump"
And no, she's not joking. Well, I don't think she is... I exceeded my allotted free reads over there, so I can't tell (actually I could tell... if you're persistent enough you can do screen captures of the article before it disappears -- capturing a bit more of it each time --- and yes, it's pathetic that I know that!).
No I'm glad you linked it. It certainly provides a bellwether for how the establishment thinks or wishes to think
ReplyDeleteMike, do you think there'll ever be a time when someone links to one of your posts and writes about it:
ReplyDelete"It certainly provides a bellwether for how the establishment thinks or wishes to think"
Haha... how would that make you feel? To be identified as a bellwether of the "establishment?"
Heck I ought to be the betllwether of something. LOL.
ReplyDeleteI still think it's a terrible outrage that everyone doesn't read me. But all in good time...
