I find this an interesting question as I have argued that Trump is basically from the same genealogical line of Right wing populism as Buchanan.
http://lastmenandovermen.blogspot.com/2015/08/the-question-is-asked-is-trump-false.html
1. Hostility to immigrants which today more than ever is Buchanan's biggest issue. He warns that immigration will simply be the death of the Republican party.
2. What the Scott Sumners of the world deride as 'economic autarky'-every country in the world is taking advantage of us on trade and with currencies.
So I've been curious what Buchanan has to say about him. I'm happy to say that it's very favorable.
"If his Republican opponents will not take down Donald Trump, Fox News will not only show them how it is done. Fox News will do the job for them."
"That is the message that came out loud and clear from last Thursday’s debate in Cleveland, which was viewed by the largest cable audience ever to watch a political event — 24 million Americans."
As political theater, it was exciting and entertaining.
"But what was supposed to be a debate among the top-10 Republican candidates turned into a bear-baiting of Donald Trump."
"Make no mistake. The issues Fox News raised were legitimate."
"Trump’s threat to run third party, his remarks about women who have affronted him, the bankruptcies that four of his companies went through as he built his real estate empire — these are all fair game."
"What was wrong here was that it was not his Republican rivals raising these issues or taking on Trump. It was the Fox News “moderators” of what was supposed to be a candidates’ debate. They came into the arena to do to Trump what his GOP rivals have been too timid or reluctant to do."
"Chris Wallace and Megyn Kelly came with their oppo research done and attack questions prepared — to sack Trump in the end zone and send him to the locker room on a stretcher."
"When did that become the job of a “moderator” who is supposed to be more of a referee than a middle linebacker?"

These questions may have been legitimate but to start out with the first two questions of the debate being the third party pledge and then his insults of various women was highly prejudicial. It was meant to put Trump on the defensive.
It clearly showed as Buchanan says that the GOP establishment wants Trump out of this race and that Fox came in to do its work for it.
Buchanan says regarding third party Trump should keep his options open.
"In the Cleveland debate, Donald Trump refused to commit to support whomever the Republican Party nominates in 2016."
"Trump would be wise to maintain his freedom of action."
"For there is a plot afoot in The Washington Post Conservative Club to purge Trump from the Republican Party before the primaries begin."

The beauty of it is you have George Will and Jennifer Rubin-aka, The Washington Post Conservative Club-on one said but Rush Limbaugh, Howie Carr and Buchanan on the other.

It's not hard to figure out which side represents the true sentiment of the Tea Party.
Rush on Friday admitted that William F. Buckley would have probably tried to drum Trump out of the race.
"I think, in our culture today, just in different forms. I think what Buckley would think of Trump? Probably for lessons there, take a look at what Buckley did to Pat Buchanan. Pat Buchanan had written a couple of columns that were thought by many to be anti-Semitic in his references to Israel and the AIPAC, the lobbying group."
"And Buckley did write a piece saying that he, after careful thought, did consider Buchanan to be anti-Semitic in those instances. Buckley, of course, succeeded in excommunicating the John Birch Society from the conservative movement and so forth. So my guess is that Buckley would be amused and would get as much out of it as he could, but, at some point, he would probably denounce Trump."

In the time immediately after WFB's death in 2009 Rush had suggested he may be the legitimate successor to him.
"One of the questions I always ask, "What would Bill say?" When I was stuck on an issue or an opinion, "What would Bill say? What would Bill think?" and I think Bill would probably thank you and say, "Yes, madam, you're very intelligent, very wise, and you're right."

Although WFB's son Christopher Buckley didn't agree with that.
But if he wanted to be today's WFB, Rush is not doing what he knows WFB would have done here regarding Trump. And I'm very happy about that. This really is a base-establishment war. The establishment just wants them to shut up and get behind Jeb and the base is having none of it.
