Lawrence Lessig's Single Issue Campaign

If he's trying to raise awareness for the issue of money in politics ok. But I have to admit that I don't like single issue campaigns-or certainly I wouldn't vote for it.

This is something I've noticed about activists as well.

     http://lastmenandovermen.blogspot.com/2015/08/an-observation-about-black-lives-matter.html

They tend to be single issue oriented. All they care about is their issue. So while I agree with all the actual proposals of Black Lives Matter and agree something must be done about the epidemic of problems with African-Americans and the police-BLM seems to think that this is the only thing candidates should be allowed to talk about.

They also seem to think that it's not enough to propose policies that help black folks you have to say 'This is a policy that will help black folks'-but politics requires politicians to appeal to the entire electorate. Activists can never deal with the fact that there are political realities.

Now Lessig is talking single issue campaigns to their obvious nadir and running solely on money in politics.

"The other Democratic candidates have been addressing political reform issues as well. Clinton, Sanders and former Maryland governor Martin O'Malley have said they want to overturn the Supreme Court's 2010 Citizens United decision, which allowed corporations and unions to spend unlimited sums of money on independent election activities."

"But Lessig said Clinton "hasn't addressed the real reform we need."

"Even if she did say exactly the right things, I don’t think it’s credible that she could achieve it because she – and the same thing with Bernie – would be coming to office with a mandate that’s divided among five or six different issues," Lessig said. "The plausibility of creating the kind of mandate necessary to take on the most powerful forces inside of Washington is zero. This is what led me to recognize that we have to find a different way of doing this.”

He promises to solve the problem and then leave the White House and his Veep will take over. I think this shows the mindset of single issue activists very well and why I'm not a fan of them.

In their mind only their issue matters. So people who oppose Keystone don't care about any other issues, or BLM cares about no issues not explicitly related to black folks and Lessig cares only about campaign reform.

I think though he's interesting in admitting that the real problem is that a candidate much less a politician has to be concerned about lots of issues that all are legitimate and important.
