This is the Lawrence O'Donnell fallacy. Lawrence is put off by how vulgar Trumpism is.

But he misses that the party was already Trumpist before Trump ran.

The idea of taking away birthright citizenship is not an original idea of Trump. Rand Paul had such a bill in Congress. GOP legal groups have tried to argue it in Court for years.
By the way, Trump isn't stupid and knows it would be pointless to end the 14th amendment-that would take almost as long as it takes for someone to become an American citizen legally.
He just means his lawyers would try another lawsuit.
It's not hopeless unfortunately as we saw when the SJC struck down part of the Voting Rights Act.
It's not exactly news to hear that the GOP establishment is frustrated over Trump.
"Trump’s plan calls for an end to policy that guarantees citizenship for children born in the United States to illegal immigrants. That’s one of several controversial provisions under Trump’s plan, which is particularly galling to New Hampshire GOP insiders — 85 percent of whom said the real estate mogul and current GOP front-runner’s immigration plan was harmful to the party.
"Nearly two-thirds of Iowa Republicans said the same."
“He’s solidly put an anchor around the neck of our party, and we’ll sink because of it,” an Iowa Republican said of Trump.

So Trump himself is the anchor baby...
“Enough already,” vented another Iowa Republican, who like all participants was granted anonymity in order to speak freely. “This kind of garbage only appeals to the hard core … while alienating the soft middle that we must win in order to take the presidency.”
"A Granite State Republican said it was “harmful to the party, the brand and the future of our country. What’s disappointing is the speed in which other candidates follow his lead. He’s forced that to be standard operation.”
"Trump’s plan has pushed the issue of birthright citizenship — which is protected by the 14th Amendment of the Constitution — to the fore of the GOP presidential debate. A number of prominent candidates, including Scott Walker and Ted Cruz, have said they support revoking that right for the children of illegal immigrants."
“Amazing how many ad hoc constitutional scholars, I mean activists, now believe this is a good policy,” snarked an Iowa Republican.
"The dynamic in the GOP field suggests that the lessons of 2012 — when the GOP performed abysmally among Latino voters but vowed to make concrete improvements by 2016, have already been forgotten — several insiders said."

But you see that's just it-the Heritage Foundation wrote a white paper that said forget the Latino vote just get more white voters and that was that.
I mean, the Gang of Eight immigration bill from the Senate has been gathering dust for two years and it's news that the party ended up not heeding this lesson?
.
We've been psychoanalyzing the GOP lately-it just seems appropriate now that they are literally peeing on Lincoln's grave.

Trump is the GOP's id.

The super ego ideal is Reagan, of course. GOPers like to imagine it's always 1980 with Reagan running against Carter.
My prayers are with President Carter and I so hope his operation is a success.

But the insiders in the Politico piece like the WSJ the other day is the GOP's ego who are trying to bring the id and super ego-Trump and Reagan-into line with the reality principle.
This is no easy task as the GOP has been out of touch with reality for a long time now.
However, something is sorely missing from all the hang-wringing from the GOP operatives that understand the disaster Trumpism is: any sense of personal responsibility on the part of the establishment.
For a few election cycles they've known this is not the way to go but they lacked the political courage to do anything. The WSJ knew but then it refused to support the Gang of Eight Senate immigration bill because Boehner shelved it in the House and was calling it the 'Senate Democrat' bill
The establishment has enabled the base for years. .
So carping now that the cows have all flown the barn will hardly help. Surely you don't think such talk is going to make The Donald move on?
P.S. The other candidates are feverishly working on The Trump Rules.
