Donald Trump, Right Wing Populist Releases Immigration Plan

He was interviewed by Chuck Todd on Meet the Press this morning and Eugene Robinson probably made the most salient point when he argued that the specifics of what Trump says are not the point-the whole point is 'I'm Donald Trump.'

Exactly. So even though Trump when pressed on where he gets his foreign policy ideas he said 'I watch a lot of the shows'-then he praised Josh Bolton-this doesn't hurt him because the normal rules of a campaign doesn't apply to him.

As far as Trump's actual content, however, it's taking a little more clear a shape and clearly he is what I suggested recently-a Right wing populist.

In his interview he did the smart thing running in the Republican primary for when he was asked if he's trying to make America great again when it was last great: his answer was Ronald Reagan.

However, Chuck Todd then showed a snippet of what he said in 1987-Trump was bemoaning Japan and Mexico eating America's lunch.

UPDATE: I forgot to mention that he then went on to bemoan NAFTA a favorite punching back of his two precursors-Pat Buchanan and Ross Perot. Matt Yglesias makes a great point-Trump would be the prefect candidate for a third party run.

This shows us that his Right wing populist stance is not new-he's been at this for years. He's a kind of conservative Nationalist rather than a garden variety Republican which shows us why Pat Buchanan likes him quite a lot.

UPDATE: Trump has big lead in new Fox News poll.

He has 25 percent while Ben Carson got 12 percent. That's almost 40 percent for two guys who have never served any public office in their lives.

   Ok, so Trumps' immigration plan:

"In the 6-page report titled "Immigration Reform That Will Make America Great Again," Trump is calling for an end to birthright citizenship, saying it "remains the biggest magnet for illegal immigration."

"Trump again repeated his commitment to build a wall on the United States' southern border. Outlining his plan, Trump's policy seeks to "impound all remittance payments derived from illegal wages; increase fees on all temporary visas issued to Mexican CEOs and diplomats (and if necessary cancel them); increase fees on all border crossing cards -- of which we issue about 1 million to Mexican nationals each year (a major source of visa overstays); increase fees on all NAFTA worker visas from Mexico (another major source of overstays); and increase fees at ports of entry to the United States from Mexico [Tariffs and foreign aid cuts are also options]."

"We will not be taken advantage of anymore," Trump added in his most specific policy statement to date on immigration.

"Trump’s plan also calls for tripling the number of ICE officers who secure the border from the current 5,000. The Republican frontrunner wants ICE officers to work with local police departments across the country targeting gangs in order to find undocumented immigrants."

"Trump also is pledging in today’s report to end welfare support for immigrants"

"Shortly after those remarks, many companies, including Univision, Macy's and NBC Universal, ended their business relationships with Trump."

Taking away birthright citizenship? Would that take a constitutional amendment?!

I find Trump's framing of these issues fascinating though. In the same interview he also basically said he accepts the Iran deal. He has backed off a little form his full-throated defense of Planned Parenthood but he still stopped short of supporting the GOP plan to shut down the government to defund PP.

Like most Right wing populists his appeal is not only to the Right but also the Center and the Left.

But I don't think the fact that he is implicitly supporting the Iran deal hurts him. Pat Buchanan does as well.

But Tea Partiers will probably lose sight of his more reasonable noises on Iran and Planned Parenthood when they see his plans on immigration and that he basically stood behind his Birther comments from 2012.

Even now when Todd asked him if Obama was born in the US Trump said 'I have my own opinion on that.'
