That's my worry-I'm hoping the base doesn't figure this out for a long while. I mean you have to place him in the long annals of what might be called Right wing populism-the candidates that most resemble him are Pat Buchanan and Ross Perot.
1. Perot: The family resemblance here is pretty obvious. Both billionaires who use the argument that they are the one candidate that can stand up to the special interests-because they are so rich. They can't be bought because they have all the money in the world already.
It is kind of refreshing the way Trump just says 'Yeah, I gave money to Clinton. I give money to every politician from both parties. That's how the game is played.'
He agrees that it's kind of a messed up system but it is what it is. I mean would it be preferrable for him to just go up their with a false pretense at sanctimony like most politicians do? But this part of his appeal is similar to Perot.
Perot also had something of Trump's' charisma.
2. Buchanan. The obvious similarity is immigration. Trump's rants against Mexicans, immigrants, and China for 'stealing our jobs' is very much the kind of autarchy that Buchanan devolved into in the post Reagan years.
There are real differences as well. Trump is really not the kind of extreme social conservative-to say nothing of Buchanan's antisemitism and racism which to this day he's wholly blatant about.
On Rush there was a caller who argued that Trump is not really a conservative. It was great hearing him tell Sean Hannity that Planned Parenthood does great work for women's health and having Hannity nod his head respectfully.

Yes, it has stopped making sense-but that's a good thing. Again, as I've argued in the past, the obvious way for the real actual Republcans to come back against him is to point out that he's not really a Republican.

Rand Paul had an ad that shows all the things Trump has said in the past that makes the title of this post obvious. Though Trump's repsonse to the ad is true too-Paul is desperate.
Here was Rush yesterday to a Trump-sceptic caller:
"Well, there are some people that think Trump is a closet liberal. There are some people who think that he's a wide open liberal who has enough conservative philosophy mixed in to convince people. So you are not alone in this, and Trump has been asked this question, and he says, "Hey, everybody changes. We all change." He uses Reagan. "You know, Reagan used to be a big Democrat. I knew Reagan! Reagan was a great guy. Reagan loved me! Did you know that? Reagan loved Trump. Did you know that? You probably didn't know that. Trump was loved by Reagan. Reagan was a big Democrat. We talked about! We talked about it!"

I note that David Limbaugh-Rush's brother of course-was on Fox last night and said he wasn't satisfied with this answer.
I don't get though why Democrats like Lawrence O'Donnell are offended by Trump though. Isn''t it obvious the longer Trump is in the race the better it is? To react to Trump in this way shows you're being trolled by an admittedly brilliant troll.
P.S. There was a poll this morning on Morning Joe-on MSNBC from 6 to 9-that showed that, yes, in 2011 and early 2012 taht at different times different candidates came out of know where to lead the GOP field.
Yet in some ways this is different. Trump has been on top for awhile now. And Romney even in July, 2011 was a much stronger candidate than Jeb. Romney had over 20% then even if he was in second. In most post debate polls Jeb is little better than 10%.
