No Groundswell Among Dems This Weekend for Biden to Run

Chris Cillizza-he and his paper, the Washington Post clearly have no love lost for Hillary-admits that the time for the Dems to choose another candidate is past. It's too late for anyone else to get in and beat her now.

"Let’s take Biden, for example. If he decides at the end of this month that he wants to run, he immediately begins in a $45 million (and probably much larger) hole against Clinton."

"Super PACs could make up some of that ground, but remember that virtually every major fundraiser in the party — including many who were once Biden people — is now on Clinton’s team. So whatever Biden raises, Clinton almost certainly raises double. Maybe triple."

"Organizationally, Biden would start even further behind. Via Ready for Hillary, a super PAC dedicated to preparing the way for her presidential bid, Clinton’s forces have been organizing in early states for well more than a year. And it’s not just the head start; it’s that Clinton had the pick of the staff in every single state. Outside of a few Biden loyalists who have been waiting for him to make up his mind, the talent pool has been drained."

"The simple fact is that getting into a presidential race this late — and, yes, August before the election year is very late — has a disastrous recent history. Then-Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) entered the 2012 race in August 2011 and within three months had become irrelevant. Former senator Fred Thompson of Tennessee got into the 2008 Republican race late — and never went anywhere. Ditto Wes Clark in the 2004 Democratic nomination contest."

"The idea of a late entrant reshaping the race — and unseating Clinton — might make sense to doubting Democrats. But the nature of the modern presidential contest makes it more fantasy than reality. Democrats threw their lots in with Clinton more than a year ago. Now they just have to try to ride it out. They don’t have any choice. Not really."

The only thing I'd add is that there aren't as many doubting Democrats as Cillizza himself may think. Certainly a lot of the Hillary hating press-and the Beltway press is rabidly anti-Hillary. To be one of the tribe this is necessary-make it sound as if the party has some serious buyer's remorse.

This was how Chuck Todd on Meet the Press spun it yesterday morning. He made it a point to give a mic to every Democrat at the Iowa state fair yesterday who expressed any doubt about her at all. What he notably didn't do, was give the mic to any Democrat who was pleased with her.

And the correct answer to this is not that there was no such animal.

The media just loves to talk Clinton scandals-they always have. To me I don't get how you take this email story seriously but supposedly there are all these people in the polls that think this is a grave thing that calls into question her trustworthiness.

The fact that Jeb and the other Governors running in the GOP did the same thing is treated as irrelevant. This reminds me exactly of Monica Lewinsky. In that case we were told that Clinton deserved to be thrown out of office for having an affair with an intern.

Larry Flynt had this great report that showed that every one of those tough guy Republicans calling on him to resign also had done the same or worse. When the obvious hypocrisy was pointed out the answer was 'Sure but I'm not President of the United States.'

The new one for emailgate is that Jeb gets a pass because he wasn't Secretary of State. The press foments this and always has.

In fact though, the Democrats over the weekend clearly are happy with Hillary and are not interested in Biden running.

"As Joe Biden considers a possible run for president, the donors he’d need to be viable appear to be ruling him out."

"Not all 400 people who gathered at a waterfront estate here on Sunday have been die-hard supporters of Hillary Clinton. In fact, many of them recall a rough summer eight years ago when Martha’s Vineyard’s liberal elite split their loyalties between Clinton and Barack Obama. But on Sunday, they were reveling in party unity and had little appetite for Biden to complicate the field, despite their affection for him."

Yes, that was a tough race in 2008. I was a Hillary man to start but I had no problem moving my support to Obama and of course am now the world's biggest Obamabot-in the parlance of the firebaggers.

“I like Joe, but I’m hoping he doesn’t” run, said Kathryn Allen, who campaigned for Obama in the 2008 primary. “I really believe that there is no one more qualified at this point,” than Clinton.

Yes, I like Joe too. I like him a lot. If there had been a groundswell of support among Democrats like there has been around Hillary a year ago I would support him. By the way there's no reason to imagine that he wouldn't have the problems Hillary has had.

The GOP will always try to find something. On Biden they like to say he's a gaffe machine. So the Beltway press would probably waste time on that narrative rather than the equally meaningless narrative of emails. And remember this email thing came out of the Benghazi investigation. The GOP would try to use it to somehow implicate Biden too.

While I admit that the story of Biden's deceased son, Beau urging his father to run is very heartwarming I don't get this idea of Biden running for just one term. How does that help the Democrats? This robs us of the advantage of incumbency in 2020.

There is so much talk of how it's a terrible thing for Hillary to get the nomination just because it's her turn. Why? Would Democrats really want to trade places with the GOP right now with it's allegedly 'deep bench?'

So far the deep bench is unimpressive and been totally overshadowed by one man, Donald Trump.

"Donors ponied up between $1,000 and $2,700 for a brunch reception, where Clinton made a point of praising Obama’s handling of the economy, reiterated her support for the Iran nuclear deal and pledged to preserve his signature health care law. Only once in her half-hour speech did she draw a gentle distinction with Obama, saying she would have more success working with Republicans."

"Even Democrats who preferred Obama in 2008 said they were giddy about the possibility of electing the first woman president. They were also especially proud of the limited Democratic field in contrast to the chaotic, 17-way Republican brawl."

Yes, isn't it great the we have a chance of electing a black man and then a woman in successive administrations? Why eschew Hillary for another older white man? Look I'll vote for a white man if he's the best out there but why lose this historic opportunity?

"That’s why, they said, Biden should reject the inclination to run as he looks for possible paths to the nomination during the next few weeks."

"Clinton-Obama unity — not Biden’s decision — was the theme of the weekend on Martha’s Vineyard. The Obamas are currently on vacation on the island, where Bill and Hillary Clinton spent most summers during his two terms. Obama and the former president played golf on Saturday morning and toasted their mutual longtime friend Vernon Jordan at his 80th birthday party that evening."

  Amen.

"While there was some hand-wringing about Bernie Sanders’ rise on Sunday, there’s zero appetite to see the vice president offer himself as another alternative, said Rob Liberatore, who as a former aide to the late Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.) has known Biden for more than 30 years.
At least for now, that is."

“I would be surprised if he decided to run, unless something happened to Hillary, something health-wise or who knows what,” said Liberatore. He described his own split household in 2007: He supported Clinton, while his wife attended a fundraiser for Obama."

"Even though she was a White House aide in the Clinton administration, Leeds also raised money for Obama in the 2008 primary. This time, she’s firmly in the Clinton camp, serving on the host committee for Sunday’s event."

“Now I think that tension has dissipated because the biggest concern is getting a Democrat in office,” she said. “There really is no contest right now. I think people are unifying around Hillary.”

Thank you. I just don't get all these people falling in love with Bernie. Does no one look at the big picture? To me it's getting a Democrat in office-not necessarily the most left wing candidate in the world elected. Why are so few people able to think strategically? I mean if we get a Democrat in this time we can finally change the balance on the Supreme Court. That's more important than if Bernie is held to be to the Left of Hillary on this or that issue.

I think that part of the problem is that a lot of people want to fall in love with a candidate like a woman falls in love.-seemingly totally spontaneously and out of the blue. For me this is besides the point as I've always been in love with Hillary.
