Green Lantern Theory, Bernie Sanders Edition

The Green Lantern Theory is a theory of an omni powerful President who is responsible for everything anywhere in the world because-well, he's the President.

We saw a glimpse of this yesterday when the GOP attacked the President because the market was down 1000 points at the open.

http://lastmenandovermen.blogspot.com/2015/08/as-futures-fall-700-points-ten-year.html

After all, he's the President. The anti Obama firebagger Left has been Green Lantern for years. In their mind if liberals don't see everything we hoped to see within 5 mintues it's all Obama's fault-and no one else's.

To be sure in general the electorate is somewhat Green Lantern as

1. Political scientists tell us that a President is graded by the electorate almost entirely on the economy.

2. Economists tell us the President has little control over the economy.

3. In truth you should blame Congress especially the House when you're unhappy as they make the laws-in the case of Boehner House it's They don't make the laws.

The Bernie Manics are also Green Lantern. Many of them are Hillary haters and many were also previously Obama haters. Though this Bernie maniac hates Hillary but not Obama.

Green Lanternism means you ascribe magical powers to the President for good or ill. In the case of Obama haters it was always for ill that he used his alleged magical powers.

However, with Bernie it's the opposite. They think he can bring us universal goodness by himself because socialists are wonderful people not selfish like Hillary.

"The other day, Students for Bernie Sanders published a blog post claiming that "Bernie Sanders wants to end the war on drugs and thankfully he doesn't need Congress to do it."

Well of course, Bernie can do everything. There are no separation of powers or countervailing forces.

For the progressive Reddit user, there's a lot to like in that headline — the progressive presidential candidate hates a policy widely opposed by progressives, and he doesn't need a Congress controlled by conservatives to stop it. Upvote!

But just about everything the article suggests in its headline — and full text — is misleading or wrong.

The article makes two claims: One, Sanders opposes the war on drugs. Two, Sanders could reshuffle the US Department of Justice, which oversees federal drug policy, and use the president's incredible pardon powers to effectively end the drug war."

This is why they hated Obama. In their mind he had all the power he needed and didn't use it. No way can Congress stop him on anything.

Everything is so simple for a firebagger. There's right and wrong. Just do the right thing. Full stop.

"We don't know if the first claim is true. In a 1972 letter to a local newspaper, Sanders saidhe wanted to "abolish all laws dealing with abortion, drugs, sexual behavior (adultery, homosexuality, etc.)." That seems clear enough. But Sanders's rhetoric hasn't been as strong in recent days — he's called the drug war a failure, but he said he's unsure about, for example, marijuana legalization, much less ending all other forms of criminal drug prohibition."

Hillary's not allowed to ever be unsure of anything. Everything deserves an immediate unreflected yes or no. No to Keystone, yes to Social Security expansion. But Bernie gets a pass.

"The second claim is flat-out wrong. While Sanders could reshuffle the Justice Department to take a laxer stance on the drug war, the agency would still rely on federal anti-drug laws — which were passed and can only be repealed by Congress — for policy, and the president has little to no control over federal prosecutors who go after drug offenders. And while Sanders could technically pardon every federal drug offender, the president can't pardon state prisoners, who make up roughly 86 percent of all US prisoners (and, by the way, a minority of them are drug offenders, and few of them are inprivate prisons). So Sanders wouldn't just need Congress to end the drug war; he would need state governments' legislatures to pitch in as well."

"Sanders supporters may want him to end the war on drugs. Maybe the senator will eventually come around to doing that. But it's not clear he wants to. And even if he did, and went on to become president, he wouldn't be able to do it all by himself."

But how can this be? Every question is a simple and self-evident one of good and evil with a simple solution that even Chomsky's 11 year old child would understand.

Speaking of Noam, here's what he has to say about Bernie:

"I’m glad that Sanders is running. A good way to bring important ideas and facts to people. His candidacy might also press the Dems a little in a progressive direction. In our system of bought elections he has scarcely a chance of getting beyond the primaries, and even if by some miracle he were elected he wouldn’t be able to do anything, lacking any congressional representatives, governors, etc. As far as I can see he’s a thorn in the side of the Clinton machine, which is not a bad thing."

So Chomsky again shows he's no dummy and is not a Green Lanternist. But not many Bernie maniacs agree.
