Newt Gingrich Blasts Trump's 'Self Destructive Behavior'

You had Chris Christie differing with him on treatment of the Khan family yesterday while a Christie staff member is now voting for Hillary Clinton.

Now you have even Newt Gingrich criticizing him. Remember these are two thirds of those considered seriously for VP. Indeed, Trump never wanted Mike Pence in the first place. Newt was the guy he really wanted.

"Donald Trump's behavior over the last week has been "very self-destructive" to his campaign, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Wednesday, comparing the Republican nominee to a Hall of Fame quarterback who is in the midst of an interception-throwing slump."

"Trump is still behaving like as though it was the primaries and there were 17 candidates. He has not made the transition to being the potential president of the United States, which is a much tougher league," Gingrich said in an interview with Fox Business' "Mornings with Maria." "People are going to watch you every single day. They’re going to take everything they can out of context, and he is not yet performing at the level that you need to."

This is the real key. Eugene Robinson:

"During the primary season, as Donald Trump’s bizarre outbursts helped him crush the competition, I thought he was being crazy like a fox. Now I am increasingly convinced that he’s just plain crazy."

But what Trump did in the primary was crazy like a fox. The crazy part is not realizing it couldn't work in the general. And that pivoting would be really tough even if he had tried which he hasn't. He's been doubling and tripling down.

Jeb and Trump had the opposite problem. Jeb wanted to lose the primary to win the general. Trump's strategy has been the opposite. Both plans have a fatal flaw. Trump's got him further.

The danger of setting a bar.
"It's not possible for the last six days to have gone worse for Trump. Not possible."

Greg Sargent pointed this out the other day.

  1. Gingrich also said Trump should apologize to the Khan family and that he doesn't because "He's too stubborn."
