Jeb never sounds cuter than when he talks about 'whupping' Hillary Clinton. Apparently, even his Establishment buddy Mitt Romney feels the same.
Jeb, you're a great guy but you aren't going to 'whup' Hillary Clinton, you actually will be little more than a crash test dummy against Hillary. That's Mitt's friendly advice to his buddy Jeb.
Mitt Romney once told Jeb Bush that the former Florida governor couldn’t beat Hillary Clinton in a general election.
"Romney, the Republican nominee who challenged President Barack Obama during his 2012 reelection campaign and who last year weighed mounting another bid, expressed that notion in a private meeting with Bush in a suburb of Salt Lake City, Utah, last January, according to Romney's comments to The Washington Post."
“Jeb, to be very honest, I think it’s very hard for you to post up against Hillary Clinton and to separate yourself from the difficulty of the W. years and compare them with the Clinton years,” Romney recalled telling Bush, referring to former President George W. Bush’s administration.
A Clinton-Bush election “would be too easy for the Democrats,” Romney told the Post.
“I like Jeb a lot,” Romney continued. “I think he’d be a great president but felt he was unfairly but severely burdened by the W. years — and when I say the W. years, it’s not only what happened to the economy, but the tragedy in Iraq.”
"During their Jan. 22, 2015, encounter, Romney said, Bush responded that he was going to run a campaign about the future, not the past."
“I didn’t say anything at that point,” Romney remembered. “But as he left, I said to myself, ‘Gosh, in my opinion, it’s not going to be as easy to make that separation as I think he gives the impression it will be.’ One of the few things I predicted that turned out to be true.”

So what's going on, why is Mitt throwing Jeb under the bus-and, wow, is he really throwing him under the bus. I mean, here is a an Establishment GOPer of a lot of standing in the Establishment who actually won a primary back in 2012 saying that Jeb flat out can't beat Hillary.

Is Romney throwing his weight behind Rubio? Or is something else going on?
Is Mitt setting himself up as the Establishment's savior? You suspect this may be the motivation for his comments.
"Mitt Romney said he's still being encouraged to run for president in 2016, even by a fellow Republican candidate already in the race."
"But he isn't interested.
"Every day I get a call or letters," Romney told the Washington Post. "I go to church, I get harangued at church. 'Oh, you've got to run!' Look, I had one person who was running for president, and I won't give you the name."
"That person, Romney told the newspaper, "called me and said, 'I hope you don't close the door. We may need you.' That's a person running for president! A candidate. A Republican. I'm not giving it a second thought."
"Longtime Romney supporter Kirk Jowers said that could change if "three or four of the key candidates come to him and say, 'Look, we can't beat (Donald) Trump or (Texas Sen. Ted) Cruz so we need you."

It's been suggested that Mitt could be the choice out of a brokered convention-though you'd think the blowback from the base would be just earth shaking. Still, I agree that there's a good chance that if Trump is leading the GOP could cheat:
"The republican nominee may not be decided by the people: Trump’s poll numbers suggest he does not currently have enough support to win a majority of the delegates in public voting. In such case the nominee would instead be chosen by a couple thousand party-chosen delegates at the republican convention. Those delegates would be free to choose anyone, even someone who is not a current candidate, and would probably lean toward a candidate who is party-loyal. At this point the nominee is anyone’s guess, and the polls may not end up mattering."

Under that scenario, there could be a logjam where Trump could lead or be tied with maybe Cruz and Rubio for delegates and then the delegates could install someone.
The best guess might be Romney.
In addition, there have been some polls that show if Romney were in the race now he'd be leading Trump handily-though that may not mean anything; often candidates like Mitt do better when they're not running than when they're actually running.
His main impact could be to destroy the Establishment field by diving it among a fifth candidate along with Rubio, Jeb, Christie, and Kasich.
Mitt was actually leading in the early polls back in January when Trump wasn't running yet-and the pundits presumed he never would. Jeb had used his 'shock and awe' to convince Mitt to stay out of the race. Now you suspect Mitt has second thoughts.
