22-17 is Rex Ryan's Lucky Number

There's a great line going on here in New York this morning: Rex has finally found another way to keep the Jets out of the playoffs.

What are the odds? The Bills beat the Jets by the same 22-17 score they beat them earlier in the year to keep them out of the playoffs. True Rex didn't make the playoffs with his new team in Buffalo but almost as sweet has to be keeping out his old Jets team.

Now, as  New Yorker you might expect me to be disappointed by what happened to the Jets. You might-if you don't know me at all. But I'm not a 'New York' fan or I do love New York but when it's football I'm a Giants fan. Full stop.

It's been a tough year for me as a Giants-Yankees-Knicks-Rangers fan. In baseball, that which is never meant to be was as the Yanks faded down the stretch and lost early and ignominiously in a first round sweep as the not so amazing Mets for once lived up to their hype and were in the World Series.

In football it has been even worse as the Giants lost yet another close shootout at home to the Eagles. After this, I naturally assumed the Jets would complete the trifecta and beat the Bills and make the playoffs. Thanks to Rex, this at least I was spared-having to hear the NY media talk about the Jets for weeks.

Switching gears, the news now is that Bob McAdo is the favorite to succeed Coughlin assuming he's out.

"Tom Coughlin is still the Giants head coach as of Monday morning at 9 a.m., but it is still widely believed he will not be returning in 2016."

"And according to Fox's Jay Glazer, Giants offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo, is currently the leading candidate to replace Coughlin."

"They think he's done a very good job with (quarterback) Eli Manning," Glazer said.

They're right and he has. I argued similarly earlier this morning.

http://lastmenandovermen.blogspot.com/2016/01/eli-manning-gets-what-giants-need.html

"McAdoo, 38, has been the Giants' offensive coordinator for the past two seasons. The organization thinks very highly of him, and there is a belief in league circles McAdoo is a future head coach. And promoting McAdoo would give the Giants some continuity and keep Manning in the same offensive system, one he has had significant success in."

"But would the Giants be willing to hand the reins over to a young coach with no experience in the big chair, and only limited experience as a coordinator? Perhaps the Giants are sold on McAdoo's potential, and are willing to let him grow into the job and work through growing pains."

"But at the same time, Manning just turned 35 on Sunday. He only has so many years left. There needs to be a sense of urgency in the organization to win, and win relatively quickly, after four straight seasons without the playoffs."

But how would bringing in a totally new coach and new system help Eli win again within the next 3 to 4 years-you assume he's got about 3 or 4 good years left in him?

The other big name you're hearing is Sean Peyton. But this would be a whole new system. The team doesn't have the talent yet to say it's all about winning now. By the way, isn't it interesting how few of the great teams have had a just win now attitude? On the other hand the teams that are always changing head coaches are usually the big losers-the Cleveland Browns, the 49ers, etc.

Besides if Coughlin's last few seasons have been a disappointment, so has Peyton's. The two are kind of mirrors-both have had a lot of success but the last few years have been slower.

  1. Mike, I love your blog, but I do find these sports related posts a strange kind of relief... since I care nothing at all about sports, I don't even feel remotely compelled to read them. ;D

(In contrast I feel slightly guilty skipping or lightly skimming your posts on HRC or Bernie... I think I *should* care about those, but sports?... not even a little bit!)

  2. Well as long as you have lots that you do read, it's good enough. LOL.

I remember the day you left me a lot of comments walking in the woods and the flowers. LOL.

That was the one time I was speechless. I read it but didn't know what to say about it.

On the last day of the NFL I had some stuff I wanted to get off my chest. A little something for everyone...

Good!... I used to care about football, but that was decades ago. Who knows, maybe the fire will re-kindle. Right now I look at the whole subject as something I can safely skip (mostly) w/o consequences. I say mostly because sometimes I'm on a "Pub Quiz" team ... mostly with co-workers... unfortunately we all suck at sports questions. Usually our discussion goes something like this: "I think he's talking about football... can anyone think of the name of a team? Let's just write that down and hope for the best." You'd make a fine addition to our team!

    2. Yes I mean not everyone can or should be interested in football or politics or anything else. Takes all kinds.

My brother has slacked off on football some now. He doesn't watch every week.

Maybe it's something most adults do! LOL

    4. "I would be a good fit on your team though" ... Absolutely!... and not just for sports. You could probably make a pretty good one man team I'd guess. I do have a co-worker who got a 26 out of 40 just by himself once (normally it's a six person team, max). Four rounds of 10 questions each. I'm positive I could never do that well by myself, but I wouldn't write you off.

  3. In any case my real audience for this mornings blogs-the Giants front office-apparently didn't read me-they just fired Tom Coughlin, which is kind of depressing.

    1. Giants / Tom Coughlin (I'll think 1930s anti-semite "Father Coughlin" to remember that) / fired. I'll make a mental note in case it comes up during the next pub quiz.
