Mitch McConnell's Pitiful Interview on Trump's Racism

As Tom Brown noted in a comment this is all a dream walking for me-as William F. Buckley would put it.

Mike the brilliance of your primary pro-Trump stance shines through here:

Kudos to you!

Thank you Tom. He knows I like a little recognition now and again. Because this is all the fruition of my Trump Democrat strategy that I started back in last July.

Every time another GOP gets Trumped, it's another validation of the Trump Democrat strategy. Like in my last piece I looked at Greg Abbot, the GOP Governor of Texas who it now emerges killed a Trump U lawsuit-as well as one directly against Trump-a few years ago.

He is never going to be able to live this down. If he had pulled strings for someone without Trump notorious public standing, it would be different. If he had helped out some unknown fat cat, it would be one thing. But he used the power of his position to help Donald Trump and Trump U. That will stick to him like glue.

In that vein, Mitch McConnell's tv appearances the last few days have been a thing to see. He's not the only one. You've had Bob Corker and many others doing exactly what Jennifer Rubin has warned the GOPers from doing: defending the indefensible.

As Scott Sumner says, any Republican with any sense should just accept 2016 is a lost cause and look to 2020.

To defend Trump is to take on all his baggage-for the rest of your career. Think about what would happen to your career if you defended David Duke in public. You would simply always be tarnished. Your opponents could and would always bring it up and you'd have no answer for it.

Well Trump is about one remove from that. David Duke endorsed him and his disavowing of Duke was ambiguous at best. Also Trump's father, Fred Trump goes way back with the KKK.

Mitch McConnell, the Republican Senate Majority Leader folks:

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConell refused repeatedly Sunday to say whether Donald Trump’s attack on a judge’s Mexican heritage is “racist.”

"Pressed by Chuck Todd in an interview on “Meet the Press,” McConnell three times ignored a question about whether Trump’s comments could be characterized as racist."

“I couldn’t disagree more with the statement,” McConnell said each time he was asked.

Tom has been keeping me up to date on what the Erick Ericksons, the Leon Wolfs, and Jennifer Rubins have been saying.

Todd actually cited Erickson to Mitch McConnell:

"Though he declined to characterize the comments racist, McConnell did reject Trump’s conclusion."

“I don't agree with what he had to say. This is a man who was born in Indiana. all of us came here from somewhere else,” he said. “That's an important part of what makes America work.”

"When Todd read a quote from conservative blogger Erick Erickson accusing “the party of Lincoln” of defending a racist candidate, McConnell dismissed the argument."

“I think the party of Lincoln wants to win the White House,” he said. “The right-of-center world needs to respect the fact that the primary voters have spoken.”

The party of Lincoln wants to win the White House, of course. But so bad that they will accept an anti abolitionist? Do you know the percentage of Trump supporters who want to go back to slavery?

That they'd nominate Jefferson Davis? Leon Wolf:

"So, you have nothing to say to the charge that Trump is a racist. You cannot disagree with that premise. But you have to support the racist because it's important that your party win. Gotcha."

"I'll pass on this "logic," thanks."

As Tom says, even the Red State moderator is now thoroughly disgusted with the GOP.

"The fun part is they used Erick Erickson's article about Trump's comments being straight up racist, and it being pathetic that the GOP doesn't call him out on it, to further get under Mitch's skin."

"Also check out the comments between Bill S. (moderator) and "smagar." Bill ends up erasing smagar's final comment and probably banning him from the site with a "Bye, asshat" ... Lol. One of Bill's final comments to smagar:

"Trump is a racist. It's as simple as that. Erick called him out for it. And the GOP is enabling it by doing exactly what McConnell did and looking the other way. It validates what the Left has been saying all along, which is unfortunate, but Trump's cult has demonstrated that there is a large bloc of right-ish voters that agree with him and want to keep brown people out of the country.

"If it helps the Democrats, so be it. There is no room for a racist, xenophobic bigot in the White House."

"The truth hurts sometimes."

"Oh wow, I just now noticed some of the other comments there:

From cgh62:
"So glad I'm no longer part of the GOP. Gutless, balless, spineless cowards. Accept the very Devil as the nominee, just so long as they can stay in power. No principles, no ethics, no morals. Just political power."

"The rot runs deep in the GOP. It's statements like this that is making me rethink my vow to vote down ticket for Republicans after skipping the top line."

NEVER TRUMP
NONE OF THE ABOVE/2016"

Bill S:
"This is why I will never vote for another Republican candidate, ever. At any level."

Listen, you can accuse these conservative pundits of hypocrisy-or at least self-interest. After all, Trump has sort of pointed to their own irrelevance.
But honestly, I don't care why they are repudiating Trump at this point. They are right in what they are saying and I do give them credit. At least they are finally acknowledging some sort of limit to what they will accept in the name of GOP politics.

I will say this: anyone who has collaborated with Trump-yep, a loaded word!-is going to be tarnished for the rest of their career. The only words that will ever matter regarding them in the future are: Donald Trump.
