Donald Trump's Utah Panic

Trump sure is expanding the map. That this conversation is even happening tells you everything you need to know about in which direction:

"Utah Republicans' concern that Hillary Clinton could beat Donald Trump in the state and endanger down-ballot Republicans bubbled to the surface over the weekend with the state GOP chair meeting with Trump."

"Utah Republican Party Chair James Evans sat down with Trump in Las Vegas on Saturday before the presumptive nominee's rally there. Evans asked Trump to campaign in Utah again and to tone down his "unproductive" rhetoric about Muslims and the Hispanic judge in the Trump University case, according to the Salt Lake Tribune. He said that voters in the state want "consistency and predictability."

"Evans told the Salt Lake Tribune that Trump "recognizes he shouldn't have made those comments," and that the candidate will definitely return to Utah after the national convention."

"It's certainly reassuring for Republicans that he plans to return to Utah after the convention. You know what would be more reassuring for Republicans? If the Republican Presidential nominee didn't have to come to the state to safeguard winning it."

Trump is talking about crazy things like winning California, New York, and Connecticut. Meanwhile Utah is in play? A state won by 46 for W and 48 for Romney.

"The state GOP chair also observed that Trump's racially-tinged comments are not genuine, but part of an act.

"When you sit down with him you can see that it is more of a show, you know, and if anybody would know that somebody has that kind of sentiment in them, it would be me growing up in the South," Evans, who is black, said. "I could spot it a mile away and you just don't see that in him."

That's a relief. He's just pretending to be a racist.

"In addition to meeting with Trump, Evans has launched a plan to help down-ballot Republicans win races despite the climate created by Trump, according to the Salt Lake Tribune."

"The project is called "Plan T," which Evans has said "may or may not be a coincidence," according to the Tribune. But he told the paper this weekend that Plan T stands for "turnout."

What is turning off the Mormons of Utah like this? Maybe the attack on Muslims worries them a little. After all, many of the same Christian fundamentalists who hate Muslims have also never felt like the Mormons are really Christians.

  1. Mike, Erickson's tone of exasperation here is delicious:

Donald Trump sold a bunch of angry people a bill of goods and took them for all they were worth, which apparently was not much. Now he is going to face Hillary Clinton who has $42 million to his $1.2 million.

Well done, Republicans. Well done. If you nominate Donald Trump in Cleveland you’ll be handing Hillary Clinton the Presidency. I told you so.

If you want a sense of just how ridiculous this farce is, Donald Trump paid $35,000 to “Draper Sterling”, a fictitious ad agency. Seriously. He also paid more that $400,000 to rent his own Mar-a-Lago, which was more than his whole payroll. He reimbursed his children’s travel for the campaign. He paid himself a salary. The data is ridiculous and embarrassing. He spent $737,000 at Trump owned businesses.

The GOP is so screwed and it has only itself to blame.

But I think he's too hard on the GOP (as an collection of party regulars),... there's plenty of blame to go around: for example Ann Coulter, Fox News, Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham, Rush Limbaugh, Chris Christie, Ben Carson, Sarah Palin, Rick Perry, Bill O'Reilly, Jerry Falwell Jr., "evangelicals" ... and, of course, MOST important of all, the brain-dead xenophobic self-pitying conspiracy-theory-believing angry ignorant fruitcake chumps known as the GOP base.
