Boris Johnson vs. Teresa May: Who Will be Next British Prime Minister?

If I lived in Britain, I certainly would not be a Conservative. My natural home would be Labour. But Labour is itself a disaster. Right now it's whole focus is on taking out Jeremy Corbyn.

Labour in some ways is the counterfactual to the Democrats. Imagine what might have happened if Bernie had actually won? They'd probably look like Labour-totally divided and hobbled. This was a big reason I was so opposed to Bernie as the nominee.

Anyway, despite my contempt for the Conservatives, anyone who wants to brighten the future of Britain better hope that she, rather than Boris Johnson is the next Prime Minister. Maybe, if I were in the UK I'd have to vote for her-in the Conservative primary-or what we'd call the primary.

Labour can't get its act together.

Listen to how euphemistically the Wall St. Journal talks about Boris. It's funny how now the WSJ is on the side of those who say they want to rip up trade deals.

Who Will Be Britain’s Next Prime Minister?
The most likely options, out of several possibilities: Safe-pair-of-hands Theresa May or the charismatic Boris Johnson."

He's very charismatic, yes. If you find Trump style Islamophobia to be charismatic. His hairstyle seems to match Trump's as well.

"It would have been understandable if Boris Johnson had allowed himself a celebratory fist-pump when he appeared before the press in London on Friday morning. After all, the former London mayor was the de facto leader of the Out campaign, which against all odds had just won the U.K.’s referendum on the European Union."

"Yet he looked shocked and ashen-faced. Not because he was now regretting his decision to campaign for Brexit, but because a short time earlier David Cameron had announced that by October he would step down as Britain’s prime minister. Plenty of people thought his resignation was inevitable, given how vigorously Mr. Cameron had fought to stay in the EU. But not Boris. He was one of 84 Conservative members of Parliament who had written a letter to Mr. Cameron on the eve of the referendum saying he had a “mandate and duty” to stay in post whatever the result."

"But Mr. Cameron didn’t relish the prospect of being in charge during what will be a dangerous passage in the history of the British Isles. There is a mighty prize to be had—a new settlement with the EU that preserves access to the world’s largest single market and restores sovereignty to the British Parliament—but the risks are formidable, including the breakup of the U.K. England and Wales voted to Leave, but Northern Ireland and Scotland voted to Remain, and separatists in both are already using the skewed result as a pretext to agitate for independence. It will take Disraeli-like political guile, as well as Stakhanovite hard work, to guide the U.K. safely through this period."

"For the 52-year-old Mr. Johnson, the crown he has been reaching for all his life is finally within his grasp, but the contest he will have to win has come sooner than he would have liked. The first stage is a ballot among the Conservative Party’s 330 members of Parliament, a majority of whom wanted Britain to stay in the EU. The two candidates with the most votes move to the second stage, a poll among the party’s 150,000 members, with the winner becoming leader of the Conservatives and by extension prime minister"

Ok, here is why Johnson doesn't seem to want this 'crown within his grasp.' Brexit is a Trumpster fire.

He knew this all along. You can question whether he even wanted Brexit to win. The idea was to give him political capital by supporting this to win the Conservative nomination later.

As Johnson's own sister tweeted: nobody knows what to do about Brexit. We can add: least of all Johnson.

David Cameron though, is passing away Brexit like a hot potato. Reportedly he has said: Why should I do all the hard shit?

Smells like leadership to me. What it comes down to is that both Cameron and Johnson know perfectly well this is stupid-but both cynically manipulated it for their own short term political gain.

But now the jokes on them as Brexit actually passed. Now what?

Clearly the best choice, then is Teresa May who is for Remain. She can come in and not do Brexit.

If she wins the contest, that in itself might make the markets feel better.

This comment by JTN at the Financial Times says it all

Stupidity of holding such a vote aside, the real failing of this referendum was that no clear plan was presented by the Leave camp so people where able to make it about whatever was important to them at the time, which the Leave campaign exploited so effectively. "

The good news is May is apparently now the favorite to succeed Cameron.

"TORY LEADERSHIP GETS DIRTY Boris Johnson’s allies complain of Government dirty tricks to help Theresa May beat him in race to be next Prime Minister."

"Home Secretary looks like becoming the main ‘stop Boris‘ candidate in the race to replace David Cameron."

"She looks like becoming the main “stop Boris” candidate on a day when a whole host of Tories are set to throw their hat into the ring ahead of nominations opening tomorrow."

"Jeremy Hunt is thought to be mulling over a bid this morning, while we revealed last night Stephen Crabb and Sajid Javid are launching a joint charge to enter Downing Street."

"The pair want to create a ‘dream team’ of blue-collar Cabinet Ministers to block Mr Johnson from entering Downing Street."

"The duo are being seen as representing a new generation of Tories with humble roots closer to the general public, in stark contrast to the “Bullingdon Club” era of Old Etonians."

"But it is Ms May who has leapt ahead of the former London Mayor with the bookies after a surge in support, research for The Times found."

She is favoured by 31% of Conservative voters against 24% for Mr Johnson, according to the YouGov poll"

Of course the knuckle draggers supporting Johnson claim there's a conspiracy.

  1. Mike, I'd like to see Bam! Bam! defeated. He deserves it. Although it would be fun seeing him hovering over "the button" deciding if he really wanted to push it.

O/T: One thing I have hated about Jennifer Rubin over the years is her endless harping on Benghazi. I noticed that some of her critics took to calling her "Jenghazi" because of it. But I think she gets it right here: the GOP blew it with their investigation:

  2. Jen has another on Brexit today as well:

  3. She gets it, but as Brian Beutler notes, even a lot of the anti Trump conservatives are buying into Brexit.

George Will absurdly rhapsodizes over Britain's 'manliness.'

    1. Yeah, where's the respect for the "wisdom of Markets" with these clowns. Just goes to show that underneath almost all these clowns there's a little Trump inside acting as the emotional engine.
