Why Putin Likes Trump so Much

One word: Nato. Trump has talked about scaling back on NATO.

I think there are a number of reasons why Putin might like Trump. One is that Putin is a dictator and Trump is a wanna be dictator.

Putin as a dictator, probably understands Trump's psychology pretty well. Like Rachel Maddow put it the other night, the way to Trump's heart is simple: just praise him.

Once he hears that, that's all he needs to know about you. So Putin, this wily old KGB agent, is being shrewd.

But I think NATO is what seriously puts Putin in the Trump camp. So few Americans-even Republicans-are willing to praise Trump publicly.

Putin, though, sings his praises. And if there is anything regarding hard policy Putin likes in what he's hearing, Trump's skepticism of Nato his talk of scaling back may be it.

So it's not hard to get why Putin hacked into the DNC"s oppo research on Trump.

He was on Fareed Zakaria this morning and declared that there is no need for NATO as the Soviet Union is gone.

He also had more to say about the 'flamboyant Donald Trump.'

"Vladimir Putin downplayed past comments about Donald Trump and spoke about the presidential election on Friday, adding that he accepted the US is probably the world’s sole superpower."

“America is a great power. Today, probably, the only superpower. We accept that,” the Russian president said at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum. “We want to and are ready to work with the United States.”

Alluding to US-EU sanctions on Russia in response to its military actions in Ukraine, he continued: “The world needs such strong nations, like the US. And we need them. But we don’t need them constantly getting mixed up in our affairs, instructing us how to live, preventing Europe from building a relationship with us.”

"Asked about the presumptive Republican nominee for president, Putin again described Trump as a “flamboyant” or “colorful” man, using a Russian word – “яркий” – that can be translated with ambiguous connotations, from gaudy to striking to dazzling."

“You see, it’s like I said,” Putin told his questioner. “Trump’s a colorful person. And well, isn’t he colorful? Colorful. I didn’t make any other kind of characterization about him.

“But here’s where I will pay close attention, and where I exactly welcome and where on the contrary I don’t see anything bad: Mr Trump has declared that he’s ready for the full restoration of Russian-American relations. Is there anything bad there? We all welcome this, don’t you?”

Putin meanwhile, has made another flamboyant comment of his own:

"Vladimir Putin has apparently poked fun at England football fans, as he questioned how 200 Russian supporters were able to beat up “several thousand” followers of Roy Hodgson's side at the Euro 2016 tournament in France."

Overall, if Putin really wants to help Trump, praising him might not be the best way.

  1. O/T: I read a WaPo article about the state of Trump's campaign this morning and they brought up his emergency request for $100k in funds, but didn't say much more except to question why he'd need that. But one of the comments on this was good:

Trump doesn't just write a check for $100,000 because he lives on credit. It's why he holds on to whatever money does come his way and refuses to pay until the very last minute, until he's under media pressure, or because a court orders him to. He's living on a margin and the slightest miscalculation sends him back into bankruptcy court.
I doubt he has even $1M in ready money.
