That is usually the best advice in any important undertaking. You want to keep things simple-though no more simple than you can honestly make the.
As for running against Trump, it's not rocket science. Trump is going to give Hillary a layup on every drive. She should take the layup. Hillary Clinton is many things but she's not stupid and that's what she will do.
Early on, some bedwetting liberals wanted Hillary to refuse the layup. Instead do some crazy, behind your back slam dunks and ally oops. Them maybe square the circle and promise to bring world peace while she was at it.
Finally, at least some are catching on: when your opponent is going to punch himself out, you let him.

"Hillary does have a positive vision for the future. But a big part of her argument should be kept simple. Why be more ideological than she has to be?"
"Paul Waldman on her message:
"Given that context and given who her opponent is, Clinton doesn’t have to persuade everyone to love her or be super-excited about her presidency in order to win. She can do it with a simple argument that goes like this:
"Things are going okay, but we have problems that need fixing."
"I’m stable and competent, and my heart’s in the right place."
"Donald Trump is a lunatic."
"It may not be the kind of thing that will inspire you to write a song about her candidacy, but it might be all she needs."

I can write a song about Hillary. But then I get really excited about a smart, competent pragmatic progressive who likes to get things done.
But the point is well taken. Take the layup.
P.S. Not every election can be a change election or at least not a change the course election.
If you think about getting important things done, as effecting change as coming over a 30 year arc, the vote in 2016 is wether or not we want Obama to have had an Administration or an era.

Accomplishing change, and reaching your goals is not for the impatient-which is the trouble kids who just get into politics often have.
