You're Fired vs. You're Hired

I just watched Hillary's speech in North Carolina. I think it was a strong rebuttal to Trump's latest 'pivot' this morning.

Tim Miller wasn't impressed by Trump's pivot:

CRAIG MELVIN (HOST): Tim, any chance today's speech or the campaign structure changes that Michael just outlined there? Any chances that any of that stuff dampens talk of a never Trump candidate at the convention in Cleveland?

TIM MILLER: I don't think so, Craig. I've got old saying for my friends and the GOP establishment who keep thinking Trump is going to pivot. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice shame on me. Fool me one hundred thousand times, how stupid can we possibly be to keep getting fooled by this guy? And every day I get a call from a reporter who says now is he going to pivot? Now is he going to pivot? No, this is Trump. He says demeaning things to women and minorities, he's a conspiracy theorist. He’s a liar. This is what we have. And we have to decide, do we want to stick with this person who has no chance to beat Hillary Clinton or should we give the delegates an opportunity to vote their conscience. And that's where I stand.

[...]

"What we need to do is not force the delegates to rubber stamp a guy that has made countless racist statements, that wants to turn this party into a protectionist, anti immigrant, white grievance party. "

I guess it's a mixed bag. On the one hand you don't want the media to start selling the Trump pivots story. On the other hand we certainly don't want the GOP delegates to successfully switch.

As Peter Daou observes:

"Dearest US media: The story is NOT that @realDonaldTrump called #Hillary a liar, it's that he LIED incessantly while doing it."

"Hillary's speech did a good job on contrasting her and Trump. She focused on issues-jobs, the MW. the problem of stagnant wages, college debt."

Then at the end she hit him back on his weird insinuations about her religion yesterday.

"Hillary Clinton highlighted her faith Wednesday, implicitly firing back at Donald Trump minutes into a speech on the economy."

"Speaking in Raleigh, North Carolina, Clinton said every child deserves the chance to live up to his or her God-given potential and called that the cause of her life."

“It's rooted in the values that I learned from my family and my faith. We are all in this together, and we have a responsibility to lift each other up,” she said. “As we Methodists like to say, ‘Do all the good you can to all the people you can in all the ways you can,’ and that is absolutely true for our children. That's why I got into public service in the first place, and it's why I am determined that we will win this election in November.”

"Clinton said it’s an understatement to say Americans face a choice in November, contrasting herself with Trump."

“As I said yesterday in Ohio, Donald Trump offers no real solutions for the economic challenges we face,” she said. “He just continues to spout reckless ideas that will run up our debt and cause another economic crash. I'm here today to offer an alternative.”

She tied his weird slur with the fact that he has nothing positive to talk about. He can't answer the questions she raised about his economic ideas. He has no solutions to the real issues Americans face.

Then I thought she had another good line.

Yesterday she hit him on Chapter 11. Today she said that while he's known for saying the two words 'You're fired' she wants to make sure more Americans hear the words 'You're hired.'

"I know Donald hates it when anyone points out how hollow his sales pitch really is,” she says, but she figures she “got under his skin” with her criticism yesterday of his business career, because “right away he out lashed out on Twitter with outlandish lies and conspiracy theories.”

"He’s going after me personally because he has no answers on the substance. In fact he doubled down on being the king of debt."

"So all he can do is try to distract us. That’s even why he’s attacking my faith. Sigh. And of course attacking a philanthropic foundation that’s saving and improving lives around the world."

"The Clinton Foundation helps poor people around the world get access to life-saving Aids medicine. Donald Trump uses poor people around the world to produce his suits and ties."

"We can’t let Donald Trump bankrupt America the way he bankrupted his casinos. We need to write a new chapter in the American dream and it can’t be Chapter 11."

  1. Mike, RedState today highlighted two endorsements: one for Hillary and one for Trump. Check them out:

    For Hillary:

    For Trump:

They also have articles about Trump donating less to charity than the average American and on him having a black GOP leader tossed out of a campaign event. All worth reading.

You know the great thing about having die hard Republicans dead set against Trump during the general, is that if some fluke event happens and Trump actually does win the general, there's no reason for sites like RedState to let up on their criticism. Their motivation will be to keep pouring in on until the Orange Supremacist exits stage left, and they pour on the ridicule and sarcasm and "I told you sos" to their fellow conservatives for ever having supported "Cheeto Jesus" (to quote Rick Wilson). For some reason that makes me feel slightly better.

  2. O/T: TheResurgent reasoning on why Garland should not be given a hearing... until AFTER the election (if Hillary wins) ... Lol... exactly as you'd expect:

Obama is probably too classy of a guy to play games there (as they're counting on), but in this case I really kind of hope he would. Catch those fuckers with their pants down, and withdraw the nomination a week before the election. Don't let those greasy fucks have an easy back up plan... let 'em sweat a bit.

    1. To be clear, five weeks before the election he should announce that he's giving the Senate 30 more days before he pulls the nomination. Let them chew on that a bit and fight with each other about the risk of not confirming Garland vs taking a chance on the election. He should endeavor to make those scum buckets as uncomfortable as possible.

    2. He tried playing nice over and over again 7 1/2 years ago, and they just snatch the olive branch away and use it to wipe their asses with. So fuck them.

  3. O/T: I read Rubin's review of the GOP's alternative to ObamaCare today. As expected, she's positive about it. I did find these bits curious though (and actually a good sign):

    3. Obamacare to some extent moved the goal post. Not only do Republicans keep protections for preexisting conditions (through a continuous coverage provision), but they adopt the requirement that children up to age 26 be allowed to stay on their parents’ plans. House Republicans also generously fund ($25 billion) high-risk pools. In essence, they have accepted the argument that the federal government has an obligation to provide at least access to health-care insurance for all.
    ...
The libertarian dream of getting government entirely out of health care is gone. (“Americans deserve a competitive insurance marketplace that provides quality care at an affordable cost,” the GOP plan says. “But, this does not mean returning to the pre-Obamacare status quo.”)

So the Overton Window has shifted a bit on this issue, even within the GOP. That doesn't mean I want their plan to pass (eventually, when it's an actual bill), but that it's nice to see that the window has shifted a bit on this issue.
