Pivoting is for Losers

Nate Silver observes.

"Not only is Trump not pivoting—he seems to think the primaries proved pivoting is for losers and that he shouldn't change a thing."

Fine with me. That's why I wanted Trump from the start. Of course, I'm a Democrat.

Not pivoting certainly seems to be helping him now.

He's falling behind in recent polls and we've now had three straight Utah polls where Hillary Clinton is competitive.

Utah, home of the Mormons, who have not voted Democratic since LBJ. 1964 also happens to be the year that the GOP ran a kind of proto Trumpian candidate in Goldwater.

For comparison, Utah chose Romney by 48 points.

One piece of conventional wisdom is that while Trump is losing overall, and Americans think he lacks either the knowledge or temperament to be the next POTUS

,they are supposed to trust him on terrorism. And in the recent Bloomberg poll which showed Hillary leading him overall by 12, he did leave her by a small amount on terrorism, 50-45.

Not a huge margin but one area you could argue he can exploit.

The Bloomberg poll was mostly taken pre Orlando. Now the numbers on Orlando are in and by a 51-25 point margin, Americans disapprove of Trump's handling of the tragedy.

Maybe it's a huge margin for Hillary to exploit.

Candidates response to Orlando: Clinton: Approve 36% (+2) Disapprove 34% . Trump: Approve 25% (-26) Disapprove 51% National @CBSNewsPoll

Americans approved of Obama's response 44-34.

Interestingly Jennifer Rubin preferred Hillary's response to Obama's.

I liked them both, of course, but then, again, I like both Hillary and Obama. It's true they aren't identical.

But it is Hillary on the ballot and so if the Jennifer Rubins of the world like her better than Obama that's a good thing-as they don't like Obama.

I think they both gave good speeches though Hillary's had a slighter different emphasis.

The Right has criticized Obama for not taking the terrorism threat seriously enough. I don't think much of that criticism but if Hillary is able to speak to it in a way they like a little better-then it's all to the good.

Again, she's on the ballot.
