Why Rubio's Attempt to out Trump Donald Trump Failed

That it failed is clear. To see this just check out how Super Tuesday and Saturday night went for him.
He is now reduced to going all in in his own home state of Florida. Most recent polls there show him down by as much as 20 points.

Harry Enten-Nate Silver's buddy over at FiveThirtyEight-hates Trump. I think this hatred has so colored his thinking that he's lost the objectivity he's supposed to have as a political scientist in the GOP primary.

Nate too, but even more Harry, seem to be emotionally invested in Trump not wining the GOP primary to say 'You see, the party does so decide. Told you so!'

Enten in particular takes pleasure in any setback or attack on Trump no matter how trivial.

"Trump with that crushing 4 point win. We really should just give Trump the presidency. Heck, let's do it for life! https://mobile.twitter.com/AnnCoulter/st"

Yes, he's reduced to arguing with Ann Coulter. But Enten hear reminds me of Ted Danson's old character on Cheers. There was this character that came on sometimes in the show's later years who moved upstairs to Sam's bar.

He and Sam were feuding and somehow he got the rights to Sam's pool room and demanded Sam pay him rent every month. Sam exploded in righteous rage and exclaimed

Fine, I will. And every month when I send you your rent check I will write on top of it 'You are not God!'

Sam's obnoxious neighbor replied Well Sam, you've certainly put me in my place.

That's how Enten sounds taking a victory lap over Trump 'only' winning by 4 points in Louisiana.

Obviously. Trump would rather a bigger win and the polls had shown him up by 16 in LA. Still, it was more that Cruz did better than expected than that Trump did worse-the RCP average had him leading Cruz 43-27.

Marco Rubio would love to switch places with Trump if he could-and if they were in opposite places, Enten would not be blowing all this smoke over 'only winning by 4'-as if it's disastrous for Trump's campaign.

And if Cruz ends up winning, it hardly says much for Party Decides as the party doesn't want Ted Cruz anyway.

With Enten's Trump Derangement Syndrome, he was loving Rubio going after Trump. But what's clear is that it has failed miserably.

In Enten's mind this is probably mysterious. After all, he was just doing to Trump what Trump has done to others right? I mean isn't turnabout fair play?

But the voters didn't see it this way. And as Forbes argues, this is with good reason.

"After the Houston debate on February 25, Marco Rubio suggested that Donald Trump had urinated on himself. Then in a speech in Roanoke last Sunday, Rubio joked about the size of Trump’s manhood."

"Now the American electorate has spoken: in yesterday’s primaries, Rubio emerged as by far the biggest loser. It is hard not to see this as a well-deserved payback for rhetoric rarely heard outside an elementary school playground."

"This electoral season has, of course, been noted for exceptionally abrasive language. But for all his reality-television persona and New York barroom banter, even Donald Trump has stopped short of initiating a public discussion of his opponents’ private parts."

"Rubio’s intention was, of course, to out-Trump Trump. He had been egged on by some of his more idiotic fans in the press. His campaign advisers probably concurred. And according to the Huffington Post’s Jennifer Bendery (Marco Rubio Not Sorry For Bringing Dick Jokes Into Presidential Race), as late as Friday he still had not recognized how badly he had misjudged the public mood."

"In facing off against Trump, Rubio had two acceptable choices. Either he could stick to his guns as the establishment’s favorite and try to defend the establishment’s policies. Or he could have belatedly accepted the strength of Trump’s Make-America-Great-Again case and presented himself as a more effective leader in building a new smarter, less corrupt America."

"In trying to out-Trump Trump, Rubio has ensured he will be remembered instead as having taken American presidential campaign rhetoric to hitherto unheard-of new lows. History will not be kind to him – and the longer he clings on, the more tarnished his legacy will be."

Eamonn Fingelton, the writer, makes a good point. Trump may be rude and crude but he had an actual point. It was a challenge to the GOP Establishment. Rubio, mistook out Trumping him a simply being as rude and crude as you want to be.

It failed as he missed the real appeal of Trump. Part of why Trump's style is welcomed is it's seen as authentic. But Rubio, who has been clearly a phony his entire, short, career, hurt himself as his out Trumping Trump routine was clearly phony yet again.

Rubio lacks authenticity. He ran for office in 2010 on a platform of anti amnesty. He was a major sponsor of amnesty in 2013 and has spent the last three years backpedaling from his own only real accomplishment in his Senate career.

It's kind of fitting that the people of his home state of Florida who he has short changed will get the chance to pull the plug on him once and for all.
