It's not Hillary but Trump Who Has the Problem With White Voters

I did a piece about a Hillary-Trump matchup yesterday.

"Overall, the former secretary of state led 50 to 41 percent among registered voters. Trump led 49 to 40 percent among white voters, while Clinton led 73 to 19 among non-whites. Trump led by five points among men, and Clinton was up by 21 among women. Trump led by 24 points among whites without college degrees, while Clinton led by 15 among whites with degrees."

The NY Times wrote a bedwetting piece on Friday about how Hillary is in all this trouble as she won't win the white male vote. Please. When has the Democratic party ever won the white male vote? Is Trump going to win the white male vote by enough to make up a 60 point deficit among non white voters?

Not since LBJ-Goldwater. But speaking of 1964, a case can be made that Trump's nomination sets up the GOP for a Goldwater size loss.

And when you think about it, for Trump to lead only 49-40 among white voters is shockingly bad. He is really scaring some white voters who are normally reliable GOP voters, particularly white women.

"Trump needs to win the white vote by more than even Reagan did in 1984 in his 49-1 landslide over Mondale. Reagan had 64 percent of the white vote. In 2012, Mitt Romney had 59 percent of the white vote. Trump has 49 percent? To get under 50 percent is actually shockingly bad."

The GOP now has two terrible options.

1. It can try to rob Trump of the nomination. But this will lead the base to stay home in droves-or vote third party if Trump does that.

2. But if Trump runs and wins only 49 percent of the white vote this is going to be a landslide loss.

At this point, I don't think either option is good, though I think the NeverTrump movement is going to be totally Quixotic. I mean, Romney is bragging about voting for Ted Cruz? If he really wants to help him he ought to say he's voting against him.

Romney sure hurt Trump in his anti Trump speech.
