How to Know Which GOPers are in on #NeverTrump and Which Aren't

Give Paul Waldman credit, he has a very good dividing line between GOPers who say NeverTrump and those who aren't going there.

"They're also short on support, which brings us back to the question of who's involved in this effort and who isn't. The central figure in the Dump Trump campaign may be William Kristol, editor of the Weekly Standard and much-mocked pundit. There are a few other media figures doing their part (Erick Erickson, Glenn Beck), and some bigshot GOP fundraisers you've probably never heard of."

"What do these people have in common? Opposing Trump, even if he becomes the nominee, carries minimal cost for them. They can't get fired by angry voters, they don't have to fear the displeasure of Trump if by some miracle (or calamity) he actually becomes first the party's leader and then the president, and even another Republican loss wouldn't harm them all that much, other than emotionally."

"In other words, to this group, there isn't a great personal cost for opposing Trump. And you might have noticed that there are almost no Republican politicians in the Dump Trump effort. Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse, hardly a household name across America, is practically the only one who has come out clearly to say that he won't support Trump. With other Republicans, we've seen the same pattern again and again: They endorse someone else, criticize Trump, and say they're deeply disturbed by his thuggishness, but when they get the inevitable question—So, does that mean you won't support him if he wins the nomination?—they say sheepishly that they'll support the nominee of their party, whoever that may be."

That's a very good distinction: the NeverTrumpers are mostly unelected conservative pundits. It's also been noted that the reason why folks like Glenn Beck and Bill Kristol are really so upset is that Trump has robbed them of the importance of being kingmakers in the GOP.

Not so much just kingmakers in the GOP I should elaborate, but kingmakers in the conservative movement. These are the guys who love to sit back and say this or that GOPer is not a real conservative.

But Trump takes all kinds of wildly unorthodox positions and yet pays no political price.

It reminds you of why some opposed the Copernican Universe: 'It diminishes my own importance.'

Trump takes away the importance of the Becks, the Kristols, the George Wills. For him to win the nomination puts them all out of work.

Yet another reason to be a Trump Democrat.

    1. Scott Sumner accuses Trump of only using his lizard brain. I suggested he may only have a lizard brain, ... but as lizard brains go, it's probably one of the best!

    2. ... I'd like to see Trump use his lizard brain to leave a snazzy looking comment like this. (I could leave comments like that here if you'd paste this at the top of your posts using your HTML editor: don't you want to be abused with comments using perfectly typeset math?). 😉

    3. LOL. That's probably the best form of abuse as I don't understand a word of it.
