Harry Enten Finally Gets a Debate Right

Usually he believes Trump lost and Little Marco or Jeb back when he was in it won.

A lot of pundits think Trump is doing well tonight.

Dave Weigel makes this Twitter comment:

"This seems like a weird night for Trump’s rivals to let him have his best debate."

Harry Enten responds:

"I’m seeing a lot stuff in my Twitter feed about how this is one of Trump’s best debates. Maybe it is. Or maybe, just maybe, journalists and pundits have no clue what a good debate performance is. If we did, then Trump should be back in New York and out of this campaign."

Enten hates Trump so much and is so offended by his campaign he can't see straight. But he's on to something here.

Actually Weigel's comment is telling: the pundits basically think a civil debate performance is a good one.

That is certainly not necessarily true, so to the extent that anyone believes that, they are clueless.

As to why the rivals are 'letting him have his best debate'-ie, his most civil, there is a reason why the attacks are so restrained.

1. Little Marco tried it and it backfired on him in spades. Just because Trump is being self-serving doesn't make him wrong: every rival who has gone after him has gone down the drain rapidly.

As Josh Marshall says, Rubio is hopeless here. He can't be the attack dog but gains nothing from being civil.

2. Kasich is being civil because that's his shtick. Of course, the civil tone is robbing him of standing out as the civil one.

3. Ted Cruz always saw the folly of Rubio's attempt at Trumpism.
