Paul Waldman Urges Fellow Betlway Pundits not to Grade Trump's Speech on a Curve

Thank you. I'm glad at least he's on it. This is always a big danger. It's what the media did for W in 2000.

"In part because his events generally showcase a bizarre combination of tedium and brownshirt rally, on the few occasions where Trump has delivered a prepared speech, pundits acted as though he were an eight-year-old giving his first clarinet recital. It barely mattered what it actually contained; he was lauded for getting all the way through it without doing anything shocking or offensive. Look at how “disciplined” he’s become! He stuck to the script! There were no insults thrown at minority groups! This new Trump really looks presidential! (See here or here, for example.)"

"Given that history, I suspect that we’ll hear a similar reaction to tonight’s speech. So yes, we know that unless there’s a technical glitch or he faints dead away in the midst of it all, there will be words projected on a teleprompter, and Trump will speak those words out loud. They will be words written by other people and refined through multiple drafts, and as a consequence are likely to have at least some of the logical coherence and policy substance of which Trump is utterly incapable when speaking on his own. If his aides are successful in the begging and pleading they’re no doubt subjecting him to today, there will be few if any ad-libs. There won’t be any swearing, or surprise lines tossing out decades of American policy, or vulgar new attacks on a group of voters he has somehow not gotten around to offending yet."

"All that is the bare minimum we should expect from any functioning adult, much less someone seeking to become the most powerful person on Planet Earth. So if that’s all we get from Trump’s speech, can we agree that it isn’t enough to deserve hosannas of celebration?"

Agreed. Actually the spin on Tuesday was: Wow! What great kids he has. Ted Cruz's adviser, Amanda Carpenter has the right answer to this:

"The Trump kids seem great, but they are not a reason to make Trump Commander-in-Chief"

For some reason this thought never occurred to the talking heads on cable news. Wow! He has adult kids who can read a teleprompter-from plagiarized speeches?! Sounds Presidential to us.

"As we judge Trump’s speech, let’s also not rip it from the context in which it’s being offered. I can promise you that the speech will feature multiple statements that are clearly, demonstrably, irrefutably false. So let’s not fall into the trap of asking only whether they got the crowd excited or were delivered with particular relish; when a speaker tells a lie, the most important thing to note is that it was a lie, not how it went over. And if Trump presents himself in some radically different way from what we’ve seen of him up until now — say, as a thoughtful, informed leader who wants to heal divisions between Americans — that’s worthy of discussion, but it’s equally important to note how everything he has done in this campaign contradicts that picture."

I actually think it's possible that Trump misses this minimum of:

"There won’t be any swearing, or surprise lines tossing out decades of American policy, or vulgar new attacks on a group of voters he has somehow not gotten around to offending yet."

"All that is the bare minimum we should expect from any functioning adult, much less someone seeking to become the most powerful person on Planet Earth. So if that’s all we get from Trump’s speech, can we agree that it isn’t enough to deserve hosannas of celebration?"

Actually, from what they're saying, he's still pissed over Ted Cruz, though it would have been less dramatic if he hadn't told the place to boo uproariously.

So maybe he does make some big mistake. It's not a bad bet that he goes off script, especially as he's mad.

Actually the media has gotten a hold of what he's supposed to say tonight:

"Americans watching this address tonight have seen the recent images of violence in our streets and the chaos in our communities. Many have witnessed this violence personally, some have even been its victims."

"I have a message for all of you: the crime and violence that today afflicts our nation will soon come to an end. Beginning on January 20th 2017, safety will be restored."

"The most basic duty of government is to defend the lives of its own citizens. Any government that fails to do so is a government unworthy to lead."

"It is finally time for a straightforward assessment of the state of our nation."

"I will present the facts plainly and honestly. We cannot afford to be so politically correct anymore."

"So if you want to hear the corporate spin, the carefully-crafted lies, and the media myths the Democrats are holding their convention next week."

"But here, at our convention, there will be no lies. We will honor the American people with the truth, and nothing else."

Wow. First of all, he is not just the most dishonest candidate in 2016 but the most dishonest major candidate in generations-perhaps in 100 years.

And case in point, he is lying here about a fictional crime wave.

These are the facts:

Decades of progress made in bringing down crime are now being reversed by this Administration’s rollback of criminal enforcement.

Homicides last year increased by 17% in America’s fifty largest cities. That’s the largest increase in 25 years. In our nation’s capital, killings have risen by 50 percent. They are up nearly 60% in nearby Baltimore.

Again proving the one industry Trump will always provide a lot of work for are the fact checkers.

Off topic: This sounds like it was a fun meeting. What I'd do to be a fly on the wall there:
Trump taunts GOP in private donor meeting

"Cruz's speech could have been 'career ending,' he told the crowd.

"Just hours before accepting the Republican Party’s presidential nomination, Donald Trump taunted his party on Thursday, ripping into his rivals and joking that, had he run as an independent, he could have defeated the GOP."

What was great was when he said on 60 Minutes that he could have won without Pence.

Party Unity My Ass (PUMA).

Ok, a little more fun:

"JUST NOW: RNC Honcho @seanspicer says "AT SOME POINT TED CRUZ HAS MADE IT CLEAR HE'S SIDING WITH HILLARY CLINTON. THAT'S THE CHOICE."
