Anthony Weiner Gets it: Democrats Should Nominate the Democratic Nominee

I still love me some Anthony Weiner. It's still ironic to me that he was drummed out of politics based on sending a few Twitter pics to consenting adults. To be sure, he should have used DM. But he was hardly Dennis Hastert.

Let's face it-I love Bill Clinton, but surely Weiner's sins don't compare to Bill's in terms of marital infidelity either. I didn't think Bill deserved to be impeached-it was clearly political and those who voted for impeachment were a bunch of Republicans guilty of the same and often much worse than he was.

Exhibit one: Hastert who turned out to be a pedophile.

Elliot Spitzer is a case of a guy who's an awesome public servant but has some real personal demons. He is just compulsive with his sexual peccadillos. He surely will never be in public service again as he just recently got into more hot water with a call girl.

To be sure, I'm not sure what this says of our society. We are in an era now where for a man to be in politics-and this is an issue mostly for males-you have to be clean as a whistle. Just remember who couldn't pass the mustard these days: JFK and LBJ among many others.

I still wonder if some of the greatest politicians and public servants are no longer able to run. Often to be great, compartmentalization is necessary. This demanding of total consitency might give us more faithful men, but less quality public servants.

I'm still not sure that some of the greatest politicians and leaders were those with a lot of personal demons. Now we get candidates who are much more pristine but perhaps more mediocre too.

How great a President can you be if you have to go home to your family at 5:30 every night? The great ones had this compulsion to keep in the game. They would hold court until the wee hours.

Meanwhile, Weiner didn't even engage in anything-just sent some pictures-again to a consenting adult-and he's finished.

In any case, I'm glad to see Weiner's face in public more lately. He's been making the rounds. I'd love to see him run for something again, though it may well be impossible.

Recently he was interviewed by Sam Stein at Huffington Post-who is relatively more sane than most of the cast there. Certainly he's no Seth Abramson.

Then Reverend Al Sharpton interviewed Weiner. Weiner was interviewed on Sirius yesterday morning.

He agrees there's nothing wrong with a closed primary. He pointed out that some states have it closed some open, some caucuses, etc. He does agree that caucuses are the real problem.

He also defends George Clooney.

Clooney is doing the right thing. He doesn't need to apologize. We need to elect other Dems as well, not just the President-though Bernie doesn't worry about that.

Weiner relates that when he was in Congress he would joke around with Bernie about being a Democrat and Bernie would be like 'I am not a Democrat. You guys don't know what you're doing, you're a mess!'

Now Bernie has been a Dem for 10 minutes. Why would non Democrats get to pick the nominee?

The only states he can win are:

1. Very white caucus states.

2. States with open primaries where independents can override the votes of actual Dems.
