Emoprog Purists Try to Smear Julian Castro

The same purists who are for Bernie kind of seen the writing on the wall-Bernie isn't going to make it. So they are now traveling a new, parallel track where they are trying to smear Castro.

President Obama just last week warned about progressives acting like Tea Party purists.

"Progressive groups target Julián Castro."

"They say the record of the HUD secretary makes him unsuitable to be Clinton's VP."

If he had a bad record that would be one thing. But that's not the case. The emoprogs are focusing on one narrow issue they've decided is a litmus test:

"The veepstakes oppo war has begun."

"With Bernie Sanders’ durability exciting progressives at their potential to shape the Democratic race, a coalition of groups — many of them backers of the Vermont senator — are launching a preemptive strike against Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro, aimed at disqualifying him from consideration to be Hillary Clinton’s running mate."

"Tuesday morning, the group emailed petitions to several million people attacking Castro on the relatively obscure issue of his handling of mortgage sales and launching a website with an unsubtle address: DontSellOurHomesToWallStreet.org."

"They’re just as open with their political aims: to publicly discredit Castro as a progressive, latching onto the mortgage issue to seed enough suspicion to keep him off Clinton’s shortlist."

This is ridiculous. There are two factors in Democratic appointments these days whether for VP or nominees for federal courts, cabinet positions, etc.

1. A pick that increases the diversity of government

2. A progressive pick.

Ideally Hillary would love to please 1 and 2. But you often don't find the perfect combination. If it comes down to diversity and being pure enough for progressives, Hillary has to look at who is getting her the nomination. That's clearly people of color.

The latest NY polls all show her up by double digits thanks to Latinos, blacks, and women.

"Race close w/ white voters in NY- Clinton 47, Sanders 43. Hispanics (66/28), blacks (61/32) give Clinton big leads: http://www.publicpolicypolling.com/main/2016/04/new-york-hates-ted-cruz-trump-clinton-lead-big.html …"

"Sanders up with men (47/44), younger voters (56/40) in NY. Clinton up bigger with women (57/34), seniors (63/27): http://www.publicpolicypolling.com/main/2016/04/new-york-hates-ted-cruz-trump-clinton-lead-big.html …"

I'd like to see a diverse pick with a solid progressive-though not someone who has to follow some precise litmus test on who is the true progressive. But if there is the choice, it's more important that her pick be a person of color, honestly, than that her pick is the purest progressive of them all.

Texas Democrats are fighting back:

"The Texas Democratic Party fired back Tuesday to defend Julián Castro after a number of progressive groups targeted the secretary of housing and urban development's fitness to be on the presidential ticket."

“Julian Castro has been a progressive champion for our families for years," Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa said in a statement (all emphases in the original). "From championing Pre-K for San Antonio so every child -- even those in the poorest barrios of San Antonio -- can get ahead to passing a non-discrimination ordinance so that every person can feel safe and welcome in their city, Castro has a long-standing and indisputable record of progressive accomplishment."

"POLITICO reported Tuesday on a coalition of groups, many of which are supporting Bernie Sanders, launching a preemptive campaign against Castro to disqualify him from consideration as Hillary Clinton's running mate."

“He’s been working hard to revitalize cities across America and making sure everyone has a shot at the American Dream," Hinojosa's statement continued. “Julian’s story and that of his brother Joaquin is a uniquely American story and one we should all be proud of," Hinojosa said, referring to the Castro's brother, who represents Texas' 20th congressional district. "Texas Democrats would be honored to stand by Julian Castro as the next Vice President. Que dios los bendiga.”

Nice try, Berners. You don't get to smear Julian Castro and be the arbiter of who Hillary is allowed to pick. You backed a loser.

As Stephen Phillips says, it's important for Dems to remember who the real base is: the Obama Coalition.
