Ted Cruz Disses NY, Bernie Disses the South

Ted Cruz had a tough day yesterday talking before a big NY audience. Cruz is getting nowhere in the state. NYers know he doesn't like us, and we don't like him.

Bernie is doing something weirdly similar with the South. He keeps suggesting that while he lost badly down there, none of those votes either count, or should count as much.

His campaign has been dismissing the South as the Confederacy for months. They never consider that this might be deeply insulting to the large number of Southern black Democrats. Last night, Bernie referred to them as conservative Dems.

"Bernie Sanders thinks he’s been doing well in recent Democratic primary contests because he’s no longer competing in the Deep South — "the most conservative part of this great country" and a place where he said "we got murdered."

"The Vermont senator expressed confidence in his ability to win the nomination, but wrote off his losses in states like South Carolina and Alabama as anomalies."

“Look, let me acknowledge what is absolutely true: Secretary Clinton cleaned our clock in the Deep South, no question about it. We got murdered there. That is the most conservative part of this great country. That's the fact,” Sanders said. “But you know what, we're out of the Deep South now. And we're moving up. We got here, we're going to California, we got a number of large states there. And having won 7 out of the last 8 caucuses and primaries, having a level of excitement and energy among working people and low-income people doing better.”

"Clinton then rattled off other states she had won besides those in the Deep South, where African-American voters — not necessarily conservatives — were crucial to her margin of victory."

“And in addition to winning states in the Deep South, we won Florida, Texas, Arizona, Massachusetts, Ohio, Illinois, North Carolina, Missouri,” Clinton said.

It's just a very weird talking point that he won't let go of. It's offensive, racist, and it surely wins him no friends. It's not like you hear Hillary Clinton dissing the voters of Washington.

This propensity of Bernie to dismiss anyone who disagrees with him or votes against him is worrisome.

Vann R. Newkirk II says it all:

"seriously, who keeps telling his campaign that this is a good line to say?"

Besides I thought he was leading a revolution that could win everywhere not just blue states? Anyway, Dem voters in red states are necessary to vote in state and Congressional races.

Kevin M. Ruse makes this too subtle distinction:

"The South is very conservative, yes. The Democratic primary electorate in the South is not."

But first and foremost: there is the principle that everyone gets a vote.

Bernie's idea that you have a two tiered system for voters is appalling. The Voting Rights Act and Jesse Jackson's reforms were all about giving Southern black voters say.

If you are a Democrat you get a say in who the party's nominee is, no matter how your overall state votes in the general election. Bernie is actually suggesting something more like the 3/5 compromise.
