President Obama to Deliver a non-Traditional State of the Union Speech January 12

Usually, the speech is a laundry list of legislative items the President wants action on, but Obama in his final year won't waste time on the fiction that the GOP Congress will actually work with him on legislation-though of course that is their job.

Instead he will largely go over these empty suits and speak to the American people of his vision for the country. He's vowed to leave nothing on the field before he leaves office.

Already this week, he plans more action on gun control.

In his SOTU speech he will focus on what he wants to get done even without the redundant GOP Congress:

"President Barack Obama will use his final State of the Union address in January to deliver a "non-traditional" speech to the American people that focuses on his vision for the country, rather than a long list of legislative priorities, senior administration officials said Thursday."

"Still, the White House is pushing back on the notion Obama will be a "lame duck" in his last year in office. Senior administration officials hinted Obama will present ambitious plans in early 2016 for closing the terror detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and executive actions aimed at keeping guns out of the wrong hands."

"Going into the last year, I don't think you should expect a huge, long list from the President of legislative to-dos," cautioned one senior official about Obama's address. Instead, Obama hopes to use the January 12 speech to marshal public support for some of his remaining administration priorities, aides said."

I don't think anyone can speak of the President as being a lame duck. Indeed, he's proven since the 2014 GOP Senate win, that the President is not a lame duck even if his term is almost over and Congress is totally controlled by the other party.

Meanwhile. the GOP is considering who they want to give their SOTU response.

Whoever it is, it's safe to assume it won't be Donald Trump. But this is going to be a problem. The base loves Trump or Cruz and the GOP Congress will understandably want to show the party in a more inclusive light by going with a Latino of female speaker.

It just highlights the division in the party all the more.
