GOP's McCarthy Chaos: Harry Reid Calls on GOP to Raise Debt Limit Now

The best thing may actually be what ends up happening. Boehner is basically a prisoner in the House and can't leave and raises the debt ceiling and funds the government now.

Harry Reid is right:

"Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid (R-NV) told the Republican party that the chaos over the succession contest for House speaker is no excuse for allowing the U.S. to default on its debt. In a statement released Thursday, Reid said that the GOP had devolved into "utter chaos" following House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy'sannouncement that he had dropped out of the race."

“The utter chaos of the Republican party must not threaten the full faith and credit of the United States and the American people," Reid wrote. "While negotiations on a budget deal continue, we should work together immediately to take the threat of default off the table."

"The Treasury Department has announced a Nov. 5 deadline for raising the debt ceiling. Other contenders for the speakership, including Rep. Jason Chaffetz, have signaled that they would allow the U.S. to default."

"Reid said this shouldn't be an option, and called for Republican leaders to "bring a clean debt ceiling increase to the floors of the House and Senate immediately."

"Republican chaos is likely to get worse before it gets better but the economic livelihood of the American people should not be threatened as a result of Republicans’ inability to govern,” he continued.

Chaffetz who clearly is campaigning for the job is at least trying to look like he won't raise the debt ceiling.

The nagging question is what happened? McCarthy seemed to have the votes.

"By all accounts, McCarthy was on track to easily win the preliminary GOP conference vote today, though he was still short of the 218 votes he would have needed to win the speakership on the floor. But it's not like anyone else was close to the requisite number of votes."

To be sure there was a case against McCarthy-his clumsy, revealing comments on Benghazi. There is also some rumor mongering about a personal issue:

"But there's more. Many conservatives are buzzing over rumors — and let's be clear, they are unsubstantiated rumors that both parties deny — that McCarthy had carried on an affair with Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-N.C.). And indeed, Ellmers had a rather interesting quote in The Hill today that can plausibly be read as dovetailing with the rumors. "[McCarthy] has not spoken to me personally for my vote, and Jason Chaffetz has, so that's where I am right now," she said, adding: "I'm apparently not high on his priority list."
Ok neither a confirmation nor a denial but probably if anything further from a denial. It sounds kind of harumphy.

Whatever the exact details, clearly there is a revolution afoot and it is being televised.

  1. If Obama wanted to encourage maximum chaos right now, perhaps he should call a press conference and publicly declare that Paul Ryan would be his choice for a House GOP speaker!!! Hahahaha!

Imagine what Alex Jones would do with that on his paranoid conspiracy theory radio show? It appears to me that shows like Jones inform a good part of the GOP base on what reality is like (i.e. they end up mistaking wild fantasies for reality), so that would be hilarious, don't you think? Even Rush the other day was speculating on how NASA's announcement of water on Mars was some sort of conspiracy to support "the climate change hoax" here on Earth. And then the media's focus on that comment from him was yet another conspiracy (according to Rush).
