Maya Angellou vs. Melissa Harris-Perry on Hillary Clinton

The more I think about it, the more appalled I am by Melissa Harris-Perry's show yesterday where she dismissed Hillary's historic campaign-basically because she's 'privileged'-as if anyone who runs for President will be somewhat privileged by definition; I am second to none in my love the President Obama but you can't claim that he too isn't privileged with his law school education and contacts-and though she didn't quite say it, Hillary is white and for that reason she is less interested in her.

For me personally as a biracial man-like President Obama I am a Mulatto; I have a white father and black mother-I am particularly appalled as her implication is that even now in 2015 women have no solidarity beyond women of their own race or ethnicity.

As a liberal man who believes very much in the cause of feminism and women's rights-and who is very concerned about the rollback in women's reproductive rights and freedom as well as their healthcare across the country-I am doubly appalled.

Is Ms Perry unaware of this?

I hate to say it but some black women still dismiss feminism as 'white lib.' They think that racism matters much more than sexism. They forget that black men did have the vote almost 50 years before white women did.

The point is not that white women or black men have been more discriminated against-both have uniquely in their own way. This isn't a contest to see who is the most oppressed.

But by no means is this the attitude of all or most black women, Thank God. Maya Angelou feels very differently to Ms. Perry's catty views-where on some primal level she still seems to see white women as a threat for the affections of black men.

"Maya Angelou, the African-American poet who is one of the most influential and respected literary voices of the modern age, has written a poem praising Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign for The Observer."

"Angelou, author of an autobiographical series of books, including the international bestseller I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, was moved to send the verse after being asked by the newspaper for her reflections on Clinton."

"She is supporting Clinton despite her close friendship with television personality and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey, a prominent backer of rival Democrat Barack Obama, the first black presidential hopeful with a real chance of reaching the White House."

Angelou is steadfast in her loyalty to Clinton. She said recently: 'I made up my mind 15 years ago that if she ever ran for office I'd be on her wagon. My only difficulty with Senator Obama is that I believe in going out with who I went in with.'

Obviously this is a dated piece-Angelou wrote this for 2008. But clearly this is one black female champion that doesn't mind Hillary 'standing on her shoulders' or vice versa.

I for one in some ways hated 2008 because I loved both the President and Hillary so much. I felt for once it wasn't fair that either couldn't be President.
So now we will get a chance to have both in November, 2016.
