First of all it's shocking to realize that Chris Matthews and other Very Serious Pundits are mistaken that Trump playing coy on birtherism actually aren't hurting him in the polls. I would have thought that considering that 29% of Republicans believe the President is an American citizen then-oops:
"PPP has a new Iowa poll out, showing that contrary to the Hillary-is-tanking narrative, she leads Bernie Sanders by 43-22, with Joe Biden getting 17 percent. But this is the part that really caught my eye:
"Trump’s recent comments about President Obama waging a war on Christianity don’t hurt him much with the GOP base. 69% agree with the sentiment that the President has waged a war on Christianity, with only 17% disagreeing. Trump’s probably not hurting himself too much with his negativity toward Muslims either- only 49% of Republicans think the religion of Islam should even be legal in the United States with 30% saying it shouldn’t be and 21% not sure. Among Trump voters there is almost even division with 38% thinking Islam should be allowed and 36% that it should not.:
"And this is the party that is constantly talking about its devotion to the Constitution."

I have to again recommend to you Frank Rich's piece on Trump that I think explains his success better than anyone else has.
"Trump does take heretical economic positions for a Republican — “The hedge-fund guys are getting away with murder!” — but on the matters of race, women, and immigration that threaten the GOP’s future viability in nonwhite, non-male America, he is at one with his party’s base. What he does so rudely is call the GOP’s bluff by saying loudly, unambiguously, and repeatedly the ugly things that other Republican politicians try to camouflage in innuendo, focus-group-tested euphemisms, and consultantspeak."

This paragraph neatly capsules why the GOP is so besides itself to the point where some are urging five or six candidates to do a Scott Walker and end their campaigns just to stop Trump.
What's great is Trump again entrapped the rest of the field in the web he spun. First Ben Carson says Muslims can't be President, the Carly Fiorina says they can be but secular people can't be, then Ted Cruz makes some curious comments-that amount to more birtherism
http://talkingpointsmemo.com/cafe/ted-cruz-ben-carson-muslim-obama
and now Jeb who said the right thing about Muslims-that there is no religious test-now has gotten himself tangled up by saying that 'multiculturalism may lead to retarded assimilation.'

Chris Matthews can argue all he wants that most Republicans don't agree with Trump. Everything-polls, the statement of other Republicans-says otherwise.
