The Media Says Carly Fiorina Won but Did She?

Last night in the immediate aftermath, it was already clear that the media wanted to crown her the Queen of last night's debate.

It's even more clear today, and the obsequious praise of her in the Beltway press today is pretty thick.

This is pretty representative:

"Last month’s Fox News debate proved that most Republican voters were less interested in the ability of the candidates to perform on the stage than they were in their resentment of political elites. That’s why Donald Trump soared in the polls after the Cleveland forum even though he was unimpressive and even reinforced the impression that he was a misogynist bully during the debate. But after the three-hour marathon broadcast last night on CNN, that conclusion will once again be put to the test. If debates mean anything the next polls ought to show Carly Fiorina on her way up and her two fellow non-politicians on the stage — Trump and Dr. Ben Carson — beginning to lose steam."

This is what last night was really about-bringing down Trump. To say that 'if debates really matter' Jonathan Tobin really means if Beltway wisdom really matters and he and his Beltway brethren are apopletic that order is restored and what they see as campaign gravity is reconstituted.

Trump now is supposed to drop to earth and Carly should rise-and this will also give a chance for Jeb, Scott Walker, and Rubio to shine. Clear the brush.

"To say that Fiorina was the clear winner of the debate is an understatement. She had several great moments, but none was better than her knockdown of Trump when asked to comment on his disparagement of her appearance. Looking steely-eyed and determined in the mode of a Margaret Thatcher, Fiorina coolly said that women knew exactly what Trump meant when he trashed her. That Trump lamely responded that he thought she was beautiful not only didn’t retrieve the situation, but it also punctured the notion that he was unafraid and willing to say anything to anyone. At that moment, Trump appeared like a schoolyard bully that has been faced down by a potential victim."

"Of course, every other incident or gaffe that should have destroyed him before was ignored by his huge fan base. But even Trump’s biggest supporters who love the fact that he is outrageous and unapologetic had to be shaken by the way she took him down."

I don't know. When I saw it I kind of found it contrived. Believe it or not, I much preferred the after debate analysis of Fox News with Bill O'Reilly to hearing the Fiorina worshiping nonsense of MSNBC's Chris Matthews or the CNN focus group that just like last time with Frank Luntz's focus group after the first debate.

O'Reilly made the good point that the first half of the debate sounded an awful lot like 'This is what Trump likes to eat for lunch. Why is he wrong?'

Fiorina's supposedly great line was the result of hitting a very slow pitch softball. I mean does it get any easier than this when the host keeps giving you a friendly forum to criticize your opponent?

As I saw it last night, it was all about putting Trump in his place. The media really outdid itself to try to reassert their narrative. But do the Trump supporters see it that way?

I think a lot of the fan base might see it my way-that Trump was basically set up. Yes, you can argue he didn't dominate like usual but that was because Jake Tapper-Mr. Time Cop-did everything he could to tie Trump's hands behind his back and encourage his opponents to pummel him.

I thought it was pathetic when Tapper bought up Trump's comment about Jeb's wife. This was clearly meant as a boon to Jeb to raise his stature.

But the fact that he never did it himself in 3 months unitl he got permission from Tapper underscores his own weakness and that this was a stacked deck.

I'm still not at all sure that the base watching the debate didn't see it my way. Trump didn't do so bad when you consider that there were literally 11 people throwing spitballs at him at once-the ten other candidates and the ringleader Jake Tapper.
And this Fox News poll-obviously not scientific but then neither is the Fiorina loving pundit-shows Trump won the debate.

So this may prove to be the tale of two debates: The one the media wants to report and the one the GOP base saw.
P.S. I was much less impressed by Fiorina's performance than the Beltway press apart from how well Trump did or didn't do.
That line she is being canonized for she obviously was practicing in the mirror all week. And then Tapper couldn't have made it easier for her to deliver it.
Overall, she sounds like a smug college student who crammed for an exam-which is the opposite about what is appealing in Trump's style.
I also thought that Rubio has this same sense of having crammed for an exam. He has a rather robotic, preachy delivering that seems hardly appealing.
P.S.S. Most of all, if Fiorina won, then the biggest loser of the night was the truth. She lied repeatedly and in her argument with Trump about their respective business experience she liked about her time at H-P.
Which makes it doubly ironic that she accused Hillary of lying about her emails. And Huckabee lied in saying Hillary is being investigated by the FBI.

She also lied in implying that her child died from pot use and about Planned Parenthood.

UPDATE: The best way to describe her shining moment was that Tapper held Trump's arms behind his back and invited Carly to slap and kick him. It really struck me as cheesy.
