Howard Dean Says it: Biden Will Never be More Popular Than He is Now

Which is why if he's smart, he won't. It's not as if he doesn't have a record that is far from bullet proof.

And what exactly is he going to run on. Is he actually going to play Emailgate? Probably not in so many words but that would be the gist of it. He'd be the Emailgate candidate.

The silly Beltway press loves to show him with 12% to 20% in various polls ignoring the fact that his approval rating is so high because he's not running.

Hilary's favorable numbers were just as high before she ran. By definition you are always more popular before you run-because now you become a partisan figure again.

If he were to run he may never see 20% in a poll. This is probably as good as it gets. Howard Dean breaks it down for him:

"Howard Dean sounded as if he couldn't believe Joe Biden was considering a run for president, and suggested that the vice president is already at the height of his popularity among Democratic voters."

“Does he want to run for president and lose?" Dean told POLITICO Massachusetts, before speaking to delegates at the state Democratic convention here. "History is not so kind to vice presidents who have lost."

"The former Vermont governor and Democratic National Committee chair, who is supporting Hillary Clinton and wore an "H" campaign sticker on his chest, made his statements following a report in the Wall Street Journal that Biden is edging closer to running."

“He’s never been above 3 percent in Iowa in his entire political career and he’s run twice before,” Dean said, adding, “I like Joe Biden. I’m not trying to trash him.”

“There’ll be some people who give him money, but he’s got to build an organization,” Dean said. “It’s four months and two weeks from the Iowa caucuses. How does he do that?”

Dean, who ran for president in 2004 and for a time looked like the Democratic front-runner before foundering in Iowa, said he thinks Biden is at his peak in the polls.

“Twenty percent is as high as he gets," Dean said. "You can’t tell that from looking at a poll? You look at a poll that has you at 20 percent, with everything he has going for him. What happens when you talk about banking in Delaware, Clarence Thomas, or all this other crap? This is crazy.”

Of course, these comments of Dean can be taken in more than one way. No doubt the Beltway will spin this as Hillary is getting desperate by attacking Biden so directly.

But it should also be a reminder to him that no matter how the press flatters him right now, he has a record that's not always defensible.

It also kind of peeves me that as a Democrat that Biden's whole rationale is Emailgate. It's in giving credence to Republican scandal mongering. This entire narrative is the product of Citizen's United, Judicial Watch and similar Right wing legal groups.

Does Biden really want to run as the Emailgate candidate? There are reports that he and his advisers are sitting back to see how bad it gets for her. Very nice folks. You clearly are thinking of the best interests of the party in doing that..

It ought to give the Vice President pause that this latest story is in the Wall Street Journal-why are they so anxious for him to run if this is in the best interests of the Democratic party?

As to the truth: Has Biden and his team basically decided it's just a question of when not if?

Humility dictates that you can't say for certain. I do note that this WSJ piece had no real body to their claim-it's just a vague allusion to 'Biden advisers.'

"Vice President Joe Biden’s aides in recent days called Democratic donors and supporters to suggest he is more likely than not to enter the 2016 race, and their discussions have shifted toward the timing of an announcement, said people familiar with the matter."

"While the Biden team is still debating the best time to jump in, the vice president met Monday with his political advisers and talked about the merits of an early entry that would assure him a place in the Democratic debate scheduled for Oct. 13. They also are honing his campaign message and moving ahead with plans to raise money and hire staff, the people said."

All we can say for sure is this is totally at variance with a Politico piece the very day before which made it sound like Biden's advsiers were saying Biden can wait as long as he wants to decide. That he can wait as late as till the Spring and that he ca just wait to see how bad Emailgate to get-glad they see it as an opportunity.

"The VP's inner circle thinks he can bide his time a while longer — even into the spring — before deciding whether to run for president."

My guess is that the Politco piece is more accurate and the WSJ is basically spinning it to give a false impression.

What it does is put this story front and center in another news cycle-which is yet another implicit rebuke to Hillary.. If however, he really is planning to be in that October debate we will know soon.

But this will totally contradict both the Politico piece and his public attitude the whole time which suggests that he is not rushing but is basically brooding over the choice.

Indeed, the Politico piece makes it sound like he will brood about it for a long time.

P.S. Between Dean's calling this very idea of Biden running 'crazy' and the Black Caucus' clear preference for Hillary

It's not exactly good news for the Biden advisers who want him to run.
