It's not like the judge didn't give him every chance to save some face. He had begged Goodell to negotiate with Brady on his own.

Goodell simply refused. It was his way or the highway. For whatever reason some like ESPN's Stephen A. Smith insisted that all that matters is that Goodell is all-powerful per the latest CBA.
Nothing else matters than that. What's more it was asserted that if Goodell's power were curbed in court the sky would fall. Well I guess I better step outside in a few minutes to see what that's like.
Goodell certainly seems to have thought that the only way to handle this was to act lie an absolute dictator who's will can never be subverted.

Not only did the judge give Goodell a chance but it seems that Brady gave him a chance by volunteering to take a one game suspension.

This is what happens when you pursue an all or nothing strategy-like when the GOP does this over the debt ceiling sometimes you do a whole lot worse than you otherwise would have and sometimes you get nothing at all but a big, old, runny egg in your face.
"New England Patriots Quarterback Tom Brady defeated the National Football League. A judge nullified the league's four-game suspension in documents seen by CNBC on Thursday."
"The Patriots had been accused following the AFC championship game in January of intentionally deflating footballs (which many players say makes them easier to throw and catch). The incident was dubbed "deflategate" by some in the media."
"The league penalized Brady with a four-game suspension for Brady's actions and cooperation during the investigation."
