Why Fox News May not be the Trump Card This Time

So much of the conventional wisdom of the Very Serious People has been wrong. Nate Silver claims that Trump is going to lose his war of words with Fox News because Republicans love Fox so much.

"Donald Trump is a master at playing off the public’s distrust for the news media, portraying every negative story as a needless distraction from his quest to “Make America Great Again.” You’d think this strategy would become tiresome, but there’s a market for it, especially among Republicans, who are more distrustful of the mainstream media than Democrats."

"But one exception to this distrust is Fox News, which hosted the first GOP debate in Cleveland last night. According to a March Quinnipiac poll, 80 percent of Republicans say they trust Fox News either “a great deal” or “somewhat,” as compared to 16 percent who say they trust the network “not so much” or “not at all.” Those numbers are almost identical to the high marks Democrats give MSNBC and the other news networks."

"So a Republican complaining about unfair coverage from Fox is like a Democrat complaining she’s been thrown under the bus by MSNBC (or at least anyone at MSNBC other than Joe Scarborough). Regardless of the merits of the case, the plea is likely to fall on deaf ears."

Well, Nate Silver clearly didn't listen to Rush Limabugh today-and yes, I most certainly did. It's amazing, I hadn't listened to Rush in years until the Trump Train. My main reason for not listening to him is not because I think it's without interest but because there are only so many hours in the day.

I listen to him now because he's the authentic voice of the Tea Party base-as much as any one man is. Today he said that for the first time since Fox went on the air in 1997, he hears folks in the base down on Fox News for the first time ever.

It's not just Rush. Listen to what Breitbart News says:

A Wall Street Journal report suggests that despite critics’ opinions predicting GOP frontrunner Donald Trump’s poll numbers would fall, two early – though unscientific – polls predict that may be wrong.

“Time Magazine found that Mr. Trump took 47% of nearly 55,000 votes.
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL of Florida was in second place with just 10%. The Drudge Report’s poll found more than half of nearly 362,000 voters favored Mr. Trump, well above everyone else,” the Wall Street Journal noted.

"After Frank Luntz’s made his opinion on Trump’s performance suggesting “tonight his act wore thin,” conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh stood up for Trump, and instead went after Fox News’ performance."

“I have never seen this kind of public backlash against Fox News personalities since the network launched in 1997,” the radio legend stated.

The GOP establishment gives us some real levity by claiming that not only did Trump allegedly bomb but that Rubio and Bush did the best!

   http://lastmenandovermen.blogspot.com/2015/08/paul-waldman-vs-paul-krugman-on.html

Bush mostly looked shell shocked last night. Rubio was hardly earth shattering.

According to Drudge, Jeb did worse than everyone accept for Chris Christie.

As everyone says Carly Fiorina hit a home run last night-I agree

   http://lastmenandovermen.blogspot.com/2015/08/carly-fiorina-kills-it-at-kids-table.html

hopefully she takes Christie and he can go to the little kids' table-kind of ironic in his case.

I say that because I really can't stand Chris Christie.

However, to get back on message there's reason to hope that the show will go on. Well played Mr. Trump.

You know it's just amazing. Say what you want about Trump but 24 million people watched the first debate last night and he is the whole reason for that. The people who whine that he's not serious ignore that no one on that stage last night is at all serious.

   http://lastmenandovermen.blogspot.com/2015/08/paul-waldman-vs-paul-krugman-on.html

The people who whine that he disrespects women ignore that the whole party disrespects and attacks women and the GOP is the most misogynistic institution in the United States.

   http://lastmenandovermen.blogspot.com/2015/08/attacking-donald-trump-insulting-rosie.html

The truth is that Trump really isn't even a Republican. Maybe he's only running because Bill Clinton told him to.

   http://lastmenandovermen.blogspot.com/2015/08/is-bill-clinton-also-trump-democrat.html

In truth he seems to be prochoice, pro single payer, and knows perfectly well that Democratic economic policies are superior to Republican ones.

So what's he doing? Obviously this is a highly exhibitionist  man who loves the attention and is highly egocentric. But he's also wholly hijacked the party. The base prefers his parody of an extreme Tea Party Republican than the real thing in the persons of Rubio, Walker, and Jeb.

He's better than them at their own game. Well played, Mr. Trump.

  1. So Limbaugh supported Trump? I thought I read elsewhere on your blog that he withheld judgement. Oh well, disregard my comment about him elsewhere (about him having all weekend to feel out where the mob is on this, so he can position himself as lead pitch fork). Well, I'm glad he's backing Trump. Please take note of what he says about Erickson next time you listen... that should be fun.

    2. Maybe not ideal, but if Trump were to reveal that he's been punking the Tea Party all along, and that he's delighted a few chumps fell for it... would Limbaugh ever get the egg off his face?

    3. Yes, Rush and I are on the same side after all these years! All it took was Trump.

What I've said all along is that Trump's parody of the Right is more appealing to the base than the real thing.

The only question is whether Trump is a intentional or unintentional parodist.

But seriouisly, Trumps domestic policies would probably be better than anyone else in the GOP field anyway.

He clearly is for single payer and is in reality prochoice and he knows that Democratic economic policies are superior to Republican economic policies.

What's great is that the other Repulicans are so scared to deviate even slightly from Tea Party orthodoxy and Trump just comes out and says to the whole world that single payer works great in Canada and Sweden and it could have worked here 'at another time' -ie, before he became a candidate in the Republican party.

    4. Mike, you're turning me into a Trump Democrat. Good points.

OK, new (masochistic this time) fantasy: Trump wins both the nomination and the general. Limbaugh sticks with him the whole way, making life long enemies along the way. Trump decides to bring out the long knives in assembling his administration, rejecting any "establishment" candidates, and essentially "going his own way" (with a mix of liberal, conservative and centrist policies, all pushed aggressively with obnoxious zeal), marginalizing the remnants of the Tea Party in the process. Limbaugh every so slowly starts to sour on Trump, but finds no friends to retreat to on the right... either that, or Limbaugh goes full circle, and actually follows trump back to an renergized quasi center.

Here's kind of how I'd see a Trump presidency unfolding:

    5. Don't get me wrong, if all my trolling in favor of Trump actually led him to win the actual Presidency then there'd be a little egg on the face of me and other liberals who are enjoying this so much.

Yet, while I want Hillary, full stop, I really would take a Trump Presidency over President Jeb.

A Trump Presidency would be very unpredictable. Which may well lead to all kinds of problems both internationally and in the markets.

However, I think he probably would just go his own way and do what you suggest. It would not be conservatism but Trumpism. He probably would bring in whoever he wanted in his cabinet and many of those probably would be Democrats.

  2. Rush is kind of being careful. He has been positive about Trump all along. But on Friday he made a show of withholding his judgement 'As once I tell you what I think that's the ballgame there's nothing left to say.'

He did as the show went on say that he felt Trump was treated unfairly but he took calls first. So he was being careful. He's not officially backing Trump or anyone else. He never does that, He always waits to see who does well.

He definitely likes to assess where the party is first before he comes out too strong on this kind of stuff.

I'll see if he's critical of Erickson and if so how critical.

    1. I can imagine how nerve wracking that must be for his listenership... tuning in each day anxiously awaiting Rush to proclaim what their opinion should be. (c: ... read in a Bill Mahr voice: "Oh I kid Rush's listenership"

    2. Well Rush gets it. Like he was right in a way. Everyone really was listening to here what Mr. Conservative Republican himself thought of the debate.
